2,000 queue up to seek red cards
First day: 13 cases approved; 67 rejected

Ludhiana, April 7
With nearly 2,000 out of 4,500 1984 Sikh riot victims queuing up outside Bachat Bhawan today for seeking Red Cards being issued to them, a new chapter has begun in the struggle of providing compensation and justice to scores of victims besides the political repercussions of such a sensitive issue. Nearly 25 years after the riots shook the world and destroyed thousands of homes, the emergence of new claimants has come as a shock.

Having failed to persuade authorities to remove a liquor vend and a tavern from the boundary of mini primary health centre (PHC) located on panchayat land, residents of this nondescript village have urged higher authorities to impress upon the administrative officers to probe into the manner in which contractors had been allowed to run the vend in violation of norms for years together.

Rising prices bring women out on streets
Ludhiana, April 7
Women protest against rising inflation in Ludhiana Their household budgets going haywire, women from various areas of the city came out on streets protesting against rapidly rising inflation. Raising slogans against the government, the protesters, who banged plates, said even salt, that was the cheapest commodity used in the kitchen, was not available for less than Rs 15 a packet, while the daily income of many workers was less than Rs 20.

Vishal’s murder: Another accused arrested 
Ludhiana, April 7
Close on heels of solving a rivalry case between paramours, which led to the murder Vishal, last year, the Government Railway Police (GRP) team lead by SI Balbir Singh Ghuman has nabbed the accused Baldev Singh, alias Sukkha, from his residence at Karnail Singh Nagar yesterday night. The accused has been remanded till April 10.

Relatives and neighbours of the alleged molestation victim met SSP R.K. Jaiswal here today. The father of the 12-year-old girl, who had levelled molestation charges against a doctor of the ESI hospital, said the SSP assured them of justice.

Dharam Singh, his brother Satpal Singh, Balwinder Kaur, her husband Darshan Singh of Galib Ran Singh and Raja Singh of Takhanwadh have been booked allegedly for assaulting Jaswinder Kaur of Galib Ran Singh with sharp-edged weapons and hockey sticks.

2 held with fake currency
Ludhiana, April 7
Police officials show fake currency seized in Ludhiana The Sanehwal police has arrested two persons and seized 500 fake currency notes worth Rs 1.75 lakh from their possession. Both accused identified as Gursewak Singh, alias Laddi, and Bhupinder Singh were arrested from their residence at Bhani Sahib yesterday evening. The police has also recovered a sophisticated scanner and fine quality paper from the accused.

RDX case: Ghumman surrenders
Ludhiana, April 7
Sarabhjit Singh Ghumman, one of the suspects in a case relating to the recovery of RDX, surrendered today before the court of Judicial Magistrate Randhir Verma. The court remanded him in judicial custody till April 21.

Addressing the gathering, chief parliamentary secretary Harish Rai Dhanda, said the government’s decision to use Punjabi in office, would be implemented in letter and in spirit. He said the country’s youth must know its mother tongue and at the same time prepare itself for global competition by learning other skills and languages.

Local IMA branch best in state
Ludhiana, April 7
The local branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has been adjudged best in the state along with Hoshiarpur. Branch president Dr Arun Mitra and joint secretary Dr D.P. Singh Arora received the award at the Punjab state conference of the IMA held at Bathinda yesterday.

Trainees of the Rose Rock Taekwondo Training Centre with Satwinder Vohra in Ludhiana Trainees of Rose Rock Taekwondo Training Centre, near Jalandhar bypass, had a brush with Satwinder Vohra, an international martial arts coach from the United Kingdom, who visited the centre during a camp yesterday. Satwinder, 8th Dan, told the trainees about the importance of the art, which could be used as a tool for self-defence.
