Man killed in freak accident

Kharar, April 6
Satish Sharma (54) was killed while his daughter Sonal seriously injured as the car they were travelling in met with an accident near Sahora village on NH 21 today.

The accident took place opposite Doaba Group of Colleges. A truck PB 12 G 1487 was going on speed when its axle broke and rear tyres of the truck came off the vehicle. Satish and Sonal were following the truck in their Maruti car number PB 12 J 8575. Wheels collided with the car leading to a serious accident.

An ambulance of the Rayat and Bahra group brought the father-daughter duo to the Kharar civil hospital, where Satish was declared brought dead.

Youth kidnapped, thrashed, handed over to cops

Guriqbal Singh (22), a resident of Ranjit Nagar in Kharar, was allegedly kidnapped, beaten up and then handed over to Mataur police post on Saturday late night.

Guriqbal and his four friends, including Raman Verma, Hemant Verma from Kharar and Chetan and Gagan from Fatehgarh Sahib were coming back after attending the retirement party of their friend's father in Khanpur resort. When they reached near Khanpur village at 11 pm, another vehicle hit them. All five youth descended from the vehicle and had a verbal duel with the occupants of the other vehicle. They reached a mutual consent wherein the owner of the other vehicle gave Rs 2,000 as compensation for damaging the youth's car.

Later, when Guriqbal and his friends reached near Kharar civil hospital, two vehicles gheraoed their car and stopped them. Around 15 to 16 youth descended from these vehicles and started beating up Guriqbal and his friends. While all others managed to flee, the attackers managed to get hold of Guriqbal and the car he was traveling in.

Investigating officer in the case ASI Inderjeet Singh said the attackers took him to Rana Factory in Phase VIII, Industrial Area, Mohali. There they beat up Guriqbal before dropping him off at Mataur police post. "They told Mataur police officials that they had a fight with Guriqbal and dropped him there. Thereafter, they soon ran away," Inderjeet added.

Meanwhile, by midnight, Guriqbal's friends had informed the Kharar city police about the incident. Guriqbal called up his family from Mataur. Police took him to the Kharar civil hospital.

Police have booked Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Phase IIIB2, and some others for kidnapping, illegal confinement and stealing car. No arrest had been made till filing of this report.

2 die in accidents

Dera Bassi, April 6
Vimla Devi (60), a resident of Sayana, Haryana, died after she was hit by an unidentified vehicle on the link road of Pandwala village here.

The accident took place yesterday evening after which the victim was rushed to the PGI where she died today. Vimla had come to visit her brother Ram Rattan and was undergoing treatment at PGI. She had gone for a walk on the link road when the accident took place. The police has started inquest proceedings on the statement of the victim’s brother Ram Rattan and her nephew Pradeep Kumar.

In another incident, Raju Chaoudhry (30), a migrant labourer, died late last night when he was working in a stone crusher near Mubarkpur here. The victim’s shirt got entangled in the machine and he was pulled in and died on the spot.

AITA: Naveen humbles Ankush

Naveen Anand moved ahead thrashing Ankush Arora, 8-0, in the second round of boys’ under-14 qualifying match in the AITA Super Series being played at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association Courts, Sector 10, here today.

Local lad Nischay Rawal got the better of Jaspinder Singh by 8-5 in the boys’ under-16 singles qualifying second round match.

Gurinder takes HDFC to victory

HDFC XI rode on half century by Gurinder Saini (74) to beat Dell XI by 40 runs in the Vth Bharat Kesho Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here today.

Batting first, HDFC XI mustered 130 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. Displaying good performance, Gurinder Saini kept one end intact as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Vipan was the second highest scorer with 14 runs.

Dennis was the pick of the bowlers for Dell XI, finishing with three important wickets for 29 runs.

In reply, Dell XI could not put up good show and were all out on 90 runs.

Balwar Pooni claimed four for just 20 runs.

In the second match of the day, Fotis XI defeated Haryana Warehousing Corporation XI by three runs.

Batting first, Fortis XI put on 129 runs in 25 overs. Chasing the target, HWC gave up on 126 for 3 in the allotted overs.

In the other match, Dell XI managed to defated Airtel XI by 6 wickets.

Arunima emerges winner

Arunima Goyal emerged winner accumulating 4.5 points in the under-11 (girls) category trailing Tarini Goyal and Roopam Bhardwaj to second and third spots, respectively in the Ist Kids’ Own Money Children Chess Carnival-2008 for boys and girls at Sector 17 here today.

In under-11 boys’ section, Tejas Nagpal (5.5 points) secured first position while Apporav Anand was second and Sunbir Chawla got third position.

The chief guest Vivek Atray, director of tourism, Chandigarh administration, distributed the prizes and certificates among the winners.

Police club win by 7 wickets

Mohali Press Club lost to Mohali Police Club by seven wickets in a twenty-20 friendly match at Yadwindra Public School here today.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Mohali Press Club were all out on 102 in 19.3 overs. It was a rickety start for the press people as they lost first five wickets when the scoreboard read just 15 runs. Daljit Singh (26) and Ankush were the only notable contributors.

For police team, Rakesh Kumar was the most successful bowler with 4 for 13 runs while Nirmal Singh and Ravi took two wickets each for 5 and 25 runs, respectively.

In reply, Mohali police reached the target losing three wickets in 12.3 overs. They scored 103 runs losing three wickets in the course. Manjit Singh and Ravi guided the team to victory by scoring 33 and 37 runs, respectively.

Three vehicles stolen

Brij Mohan, a resident to Sector 45, has filed a police complaint that his car (CHK-5551) was stolen on April 4 from Sector 46. A case under Section 379 of IPC has been registered in police station-34.

In another incident, Sanjiv Kumar, a resident of 47, has filed a complaint that his scooter (CH-01-V-3305) was stolen from Sector 22 on April 2. A case under Section 379 of IPC has been registered at police station-17. Sawan Singh of Mani Majra also lodged a complaint that his motorcycle (CH-01-Y-1928) was stolen from his residence.

Liquor Seized

The police have arrested Jaskaran and Hardeep Singh of Patiala from Mani Majra and recovered 981 quarters of country-made wine from their possession. The accused have been arrested and a case under section 61/1/14 of the Excise Act has been registered at Mani Majra police station.

Injured

Laxmi Narayan filed a police complaint that he was injured by Manoj Kumar’s motorcycle (CH-04-7252) near Sector 2 today. The complainant has been admitted to General Hospital, Sector 16.

Bengali singers mesmerise audience

Naschiketa Chakroti and Parnav, two Bengali singers, presented an impressive programme at PGI auditorium, organised by the Sangam Society of Chandigarh.

Both artists sang popular songs of Kishore Kumar and Mohamamod Rafi in Bengali and Hindi and regaled the audience. Chakroti touched various aspects of problems prevailing in the society through songs.

Mahinder Singh, accountant general of Haryana, was the chief guest of the event.

Artistes pay tribute to Koser

Chandigarh, April 6
The leading city artists and art lovers converged at the Pracheen Kala Kendra to pay a musical tribute to its founder registrar, M.L. Koser, who died on March 27, last year.

Female vocalist and head of vocal department, GCG-11, Ratnika Tewri, commenced the programme with the recitation of divine shlokas enshrined in epic Gita. Gandharav Verma and her son Abhirvav Verma performed. Parminder Kaur teamed with her young daughter to perform Gurbani recital while veteran vocalist Rekha Roi recreated serene and spiritual ambience through her recital of two devotional compositions.
