Couple robbed of jewellery, Rs 2 lakh
Amritsar, February 22 The incident took place near the historic Jallianwala Bagh area. The purse contained jewellery and Rs 2 lakh, besides important documents. The couple were also injured as they resisted the snatching by holding the purse. Interestingly, when the couple reached the police station concerned in Kotwali situated just a few metres away from the site of the incident, there was no police official present. SSP Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh himself registered the FIR, while the police officials, including the SP (city-I) and the SHO of the police station reached there after half an hour. Taking serious view of the lapse on the part of the police, the SSP suspended the chowki in charge while assuring strict action against other police official for negligence of their duty. The SSP said the police would soon nab the culprits. The police have registered the case against unidentified persons. It is pertinent to mention here that incidents of snatching have increased in the holy city. An NRI woman had allegedly died after felling from rickshaw about a month back when the snatchers snatched her purse near Lawrence Road area. Narrating the incident, Mumbai resident Daya Shankar said that he, along with his wife Feroza, had come to Amritsar for paying obeisance at the holy shrine and was returning to the hotel. He said two motorcyclists came from behind and tried to snatch the purse of his wife. He said they dragged his wife till she did not release the bag. |
