Abohar
Suicide
: One Sohan Lal (35), son of Mani Ram, reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan at his house in Amarpura village on the Abohar-Hanumangarh road. The family members said that Sohan felt frustrated for last few days. In another incident, one Riya, wife of Darshan Lal, reportedly consumed some poisonous substance at her house in Nai Abadi locality here on Monday. She was rushed to Nehru Memorial Civil Hospital. Her condition was reportedly stable.

Arrested: Two persons, Kaur Singh, son of Gurdeep Singh and resident of Golewala village in Faridkot district, and Madhu Kumar, son of Nathu Ram of Ellanabad, were arrested under the Arms Act during a surprise check conducted in a train on Abohar-Bathinda section on Sunday.

Fire: Huge cotton stock was gutted as fire broke out at a cotton factory located near Ghallu village on the Abohar-Fazilka road on Sunday. A local fire brigade was joined by fire tenders from Fazilka to extinguish the fire but the damage had been done by then, the factory staff said.

Power cut: The Consumers’ Movement, an NGO, criticised the PSEB for unscheduled power cuts. The association’s chairman Sat Pal Khariwal regretted that the PSEB had virtually thrown public life out of gear besides impairing the small-scale industries by enforcing undeclared cuts. Power supply remained suspended from 10 am to 1 pm, 3 pm to 4.30 pm, 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm, across the sub-divisional town.

Aid
: The Red Cross Society, today gave a grant in aid of Rs 10,000 to the family of Keval Khan, a resident of village Mandikalan in Talwandi Sabo, who committed suicide on Sunday night. He is survived by wife and three sons.

Injured: One labourer, Mareta(27), fell from a height of 45 feet while working on a mobile tower in Lal Singh Basti here on Monday. On getting the information, the Naujwan Welfare Society took the injured in an ambulance to the civil hospital, Bathinda.

Celebrations: Mr and Mrs H.S. Sodhi celebrated their twenty-second wedding anniversary by donating blood. Instead of giving gifts, guests including, friends and relatives, donated blood at a blood donation camp organised at the couple’s residence. Around 14 units of blood was collected on the occasion.

Travel agents booked:
The police booked two persons for duping a person of Rs 7.50 lakh on the pretext of sending his son abroad. The accused have been identified as Sarabjit Singh and Harjit Singh. Complainant Tirath Singh has alleged that the accused took money from him but failed to keep their promise and later refused to return his money.

Blood donation camp
: A blood donation camp was organised at Government Bikram College of Commerce, in collaboration with the Lions Club, under the guidance of Dr Preet Kanwal Sibia and his team from Government Rajindra Hospital on Monday. As many as 50 students donated blood in the camp.

ZIRAKPUR
Bridge to remain closed
: The bridge over river Ghaggar near Bhankarpur village on Ambala-Zirakpur road will remain closed for traffic on February 3 from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm due to repair work.

Tribute paid: Rich tributes were paid to Lala Lajpat Rai by the staff of Punjab National Bank, on the martyr’s 143rd birth anniversary today. He was the founder of Punjab National Bank. R.K. Gupta, general manager, Punjab National Bank, Chandigarh Zone, gave a brief background on how the leader was responsible for setting up the bank.

Workshop: A training-cum-orientation workshop was organised by the Haryana Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections Kalyan Nigam for socio-economic upliftment of disabled persons of Haryana. Various schemes of the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation were discussed in the workshop.

MoU signed
: Moving a step further in its pursuit for quality global placements the world over, World Wide Immigration and Consultancy Services (WWICS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Futurum Group of Prague, a Czech Republic venture to enable Indian and Asian skilled workers and businessmen to immigrate and permanently settle in Czech Republic.

Demonstrations on Jan 31
: On directions of the president of the Haryana Janhit Congress and MP, Kuldeep Bishnoi, demonstrations will be organised in the district on January 31 in protest against the power and water crisis by carrying lighted lanterns and candles. In a press statement, which was released here on Monday, it was alleged that people were upset with unscheduled power cuts. To express their concern, members of the HJC will demonstrate in the district to wake the Congress government.

Art and craft centre:
Haryana Governor Dr A.R. Kidwai will inaugurate an art and craft centre for girls belonging to poor families at Guru Gobind Singh Martial Art Museum in Bilaspur here on February 2. He will also start a child labour welfare programme and distribute blankets, sweaters and utensils to 500 poor families of the district. DC Nitin Kumar Yadav in a press statement issued here on Monday said Kidwai would also inaugurate a free eye check-camp at the museum, which would be organised by the district health department in association with the district Red Cross Society.
