Villagers detain swindlers
The gang collected money for ‘fake’ injections
Ludhiana, January 13
For hours irate residents of Chak Sarwan Nath village on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road today detained two members of a gang of swindlers who had been making rounds of the village for a week, collecting Rs 70 per person for issuing a ‘blue card’ and administering a ‘dose of hepatitis-B’ injection.

14 booked for immigration fraud

The Ludhiana (Rural) police has booked at least 14 persons, including owners of marriage bureaus and marriage palaces, who had allegedly been duping innocent people on the pretext of sending them abroad on the basis of fake marriages and promising to find them jobs there.

Licence to kill: No test, just pay for driver’s licence

A racket involving the owners of various training institutes in driving, agents and some officials of the District Transport Office here have made the issuing of driver’s licence virtually a joke.

Hike in steel prices & power cut hit industry

Industrial production has been hit hard due to the hike in steel prices and power cut. The power cut has resulted in the fall of production of the industries by 15 per cent to 20 per cent, according to local industrialists.

The forest department today rescued a sambhar that had strayed into Focal Point area from the Mattewara forest reserve.

Land use: Industry buoyed at change in rates

The local industry said today that the government’s decision to slash external development charges and change of the land use rates would give a fillip to the industrial expansion in the state.

Lohri in honour of the girlchild
Ludhiana, January 12
Shakti Unite Punjab, in association with the health department, celebrated Lohri in a unique way by inviting 35 girls along with their mothers at Nehru Sidhant Kendra. The chief guest S.P Sharma, CMO, while addressing the audience appreciated the initiative to check the menace of female foeticide. “This celebration will infuse a new thinking among people,” he said.

Employees’ body plans statewide agitation

The Punjab State Service Federation has decided to launch a statewide agitation against the Badal government for not implementing employee-friendly policies in the state.

Trust plans to open more educational institutions
Banur, January 12
The Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust has embarked upon an ambitious project to start a number of educational institutions in the region. 
The trust is also planning to set up counselling centres to guide educated youth for career-oriented education.

Plight of Pakistani woman, Inayati, who migrates to India after marriage, and then undergoes a turbulent life due to tension between the two countries, was vividly portrayed in “Paridney Jaun Kithhe”, a play staged at Guru Nanak Dev Bhavan today.

The rates of fruits and vegetables have reduced a little thanks to increase in supply. Prices of these commodities have reduced by 10 to 15 per cent since the last 10 days.

Two arrested
Jagraon, January 12
The Sidhwan Bet police has arrested two persons and seized 17,610 ml of illicit liquor from their possession. Harvinder Singh of Khurshaidpur was arrested from Gorssian Khan Mohammad village and 11,430 ml of illicit liquor seized from him.
