Workers upset over ‘bickering’ in DCC
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, December 25
Lack of coordination among the leaders of the District Congress Committee (DCC), Hoshiarpur, has created frustration among the party workers as a result of which the district unit of the Congress has become almost ineffective.

The common workers are bitterly disappointed as they as they have to get even their petty works done from government offices.

The office of the DCC, which remained overcrowded during the past, now wears a deserted look as none of the local Congress leaders ever visit it now.

Member of the Rajya Sabha Dharampal Sabharwal, who has been assigned the duty of the president of the DCC, generally remains out of station due to his engagements in the Rajya Sabha. Moreover, he could not succeed in establishing harmony among the local leaders to bring all of them on one platform.

There was a time when the district was known for its pro-Congress attitude and all of its segments were represented by Congress nominees. Out of the eight assembly segments, all of its nominees, except Lov Kumar Goldy, were defeated in the last state assembly elections.

There are about half a dozen factions in the DCC led by present president Dharampal Sabharwal, former ministers Romesh Chander Dogra and Naresh Thakur, former MP Charanjit Singh Channi, former chairman Market Committee, Hoshiarpur, Sunder Sham Arora and former Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha Dr Kewal Krishan.

On the condition of anonymity, many of the Congress workers said union minister for tourism Ambika Soni, whose in-laws belong to the suburban village of Bajwara adjoining Hoshiarpur, got the president of the DCC appointed without consulting any of the party workers.

They alleged that some of the local Congress leaders, who had no base among the Congressmen, were being patronised by her in public. The real leaders of the party had been sidetracked and the workers were completely ignored due to which the party had become ineffective and had lost its base among the masses.

The state leadership also ignored the district as Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has not visited it after assuming the charge of the president of the PPCC.

According to party sources, the present president of the DCC is going to be replaced very shortly. The local Congress leaders have started campaigning to get themselves nominated as the new president of the party.

Our Correspondent

Nawanshahr, December 25
Rise in incidents of burglary is giving sleepless nights to residents here. After a series of burglaries in single night, recently, burglars struck again at a shop situated at Karyam Road here last night.

Police officials however, rue non cooperation from the public in recruiting Community Police Officers (CPO) to put a check to incidents of theft.

According to Sukhdev Lal, proprietor of the shop said he received a phone call from an unknown person at about 7 am that the shutters of his shop were open. Thieves decamped with around 38 big and small batteries, eight inverters and a TV set worth Rs 1.5 lakh. SHO Rakesh Kumar, said the police has got some clue about the suspects, he claimed.

The SHO rued that people did not come forward to assist the police in launching the scheme of recruiting Community Police Officers (CPO) to check incidents of thefts in the town. The police will recruit night watchmen in different localities under the scheme.

In the absence of funds, the residents have been asked to contribute a nominal amount of Rs 50 per month towards the salaries to be paid to the CPOs but the response is not encouraging, says the SHO.

A meeting with the municipal councillors in this regard proved futile.

The CPO scheme, launched in Banga, proved successful in controlling burglaries, he claimed.
