Fresh water shark on verge of extinction

A goonch fish, also called fresh water shark, caught by fishermen. The biggest carnivorous fish of the Indus basin is facing extinction. Belonging to the catfish family goonch, it is found in the Sutlej and the Beas rivers of the state.

Govt busy with protection plans

Pakistani woman journalist Aroosa Alam, whose name had been linked to former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, today reportedly landed at the New Delhi airport. Intelligence sources said the reason for her visit was not known. Aroosa had last visited India in winter before the last Assembly elections in Punjab. There had been a controversy then with the SAD asking Capt Amarinder Singh to explain his relations with her. TNS

Prof Gill against subsidies to the rich

Eminent economist Sucha Singh Gill has opposed the government subsidies to well-off people. Speaking here today, Professor Gill said there was no justification in giving subsidies to a class or a section of society across the board. The subsidy should be given to needy and deserving, irrespective of their class and section, on the basis of some criteria.

Sawmills to get licences
Chandigarh, December 22
Forest minister Tikshan Sud said here today that the government had decided to issue licences to sawmills and other wood-based industrial units. The government has approved the rates for licence fee and the process of issuing licences would begin immediately.

The district unit of the BJP has criticised the Central government for not declaring a gazetted holiday on the occasion of Janmashtami in 2008. In 2007 the Central government had declared holiday on Janam Ashtami.

Lok Sabha deputy speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal today said the Sikhs were a minority in the country. So, it would not be improper to say the decision by the high court on the minority status of the Sikhs lacked in facts and figures. “With the implementation of the order, Sikhs will lose all privileges available to a minority,” he added.
