Misbah, Akmal keep India at bay

Bangalore, December 10
Pakistan relied on a gritty batting display to break India's strangehold in the third and final Test with the visitors needing just 58 runs to avoid the follow-on here today.

Resuming at the overnight score of 86 for one, most of the top order Pakistani batsmen came up with useful contributions to fight their way back into the game on a benign M. Chinnaswamy stadium track which gave little assistance to the bowlers.

The in-form Misbah-ul Haq (54) and wicket-keeper batsman Kamran Akmal (32) were at the crease at stumps on the third day with the tourists reaching 369 for five and looking quite confident to avert the threat of the follow-on with five wickets still intact.

Apart from Misbah, Salman Butt (68) and Younis Khan (80) were the main scorers for Pakistan who desperately need to win the match to level the three-match series 1-1.

The Indians, who amassed a mammoth first innings total of 626, will not be under any pressure to push for a victory as even a draw will give them their first Test series win on home soil against Pakistan in 28 years.

With the pitch showing no signs of deteriorating, the Indians found the going tough with none of the bowlers being able to make much of an impact.

The large number of 70 extras, including 31 byes, only compounded the misery for the home team who now need a miracle to stop the match from heading towards a tame draw.

Incidentally, Misbah and Akmal were the two batsmen who had helped Pakistan stage an unlikely comeback on day three at Eden Gardens and the needle today pointed towards every indication of a repeat act as both of them helped settle the nerves of the tourists.

The first session produced 94 runs for Pakistan in which they lost Butt, while the post-lunch session yielded 85 for the loss of Younis and Mohammad Yousuf (24).

The final session proved even more productive with 104 runs coming for the loss of Faisal Iqbal (22).

Faisal was taken by surprise by the extra bounce in a good length delivery by young Ishant Sharma and offered a simple catch to Gautam Gambhir at forward short leg.

Dinesh Kaarthick, however, cut a sorry figure behind the stumps, conceding 31 byes.

In all, India conceded a whopping 70 extras, highest by them in a Test innings beating the previous figure of 60 against England in 1969.

Resuming their innings at 86 for one, the visitors lost their first wicket of the day when Butt perished caught behind off Sourav Ganguly after a well-made knock.

Younis, in company of Yousuf, completed his 20th Test fifty in 114 balls with seven fours but India struck double blows in the post-lunch session to peg them back.

Younis thrice reverse swept Harbhajan Singh to the boundary but it brought his peril as well with the offie having the last laugh.

Younis' 156-ball 80 included 12 hits to the fence.

Soon after that successful over from Harbhajan, Anil Kumble and Yousuf were seen exchanging a few words. Yousuf was fuming as Kumble tried to pacify him and the batsman even had a word with umpires Simon Taufel and Rudi Koertzen before situation calmed down.

Surely it was a lapse in concentration for the Pakistani batsman who lasted another six balls before chasing a wide delivery outside the off-stump and offering a straight forward catch to Yuvraj Singh at point.

Misbah and Faisal slowly steadied the ship but Ishant cut short the latter's stay to halt Pakistan's progress. — PTI

Lara-led Champs taste victory at last

Panchkula, December 10
It was ordained to be Brian Lara’s day. He devised his plans well, introduced a couple of new faces, reposed faith in them finally coming out triumphant.

Seeing a legend at work, even the weathergods chose to allow the match an uninterrupted run as Mumbai Champs finally tasted victory, defeating Kolkata Tigers by seven runs in a nail-biting contest in the ICL Twenty20 tournament at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium here this evening.

After three losses on the trot, skipper Lara chose to be a bit different in the match. He chose to introduce fresh faces like N. Mandale, P. Joshi and S. Burkul and backed them. When the team was batting, the former West Indies skipper held himself back, choosing to give strike to others instead.

The weathergods threatened to play spoilsport midway through the second innings. But the mild showers, though continued for the rest of the match, intensified a bit only after the contest was over and Lara had pocketed the winning cheque of Rs 3.85 lakh besides the other awards.

Man of the Match Shreyas Khanolkar was in terrific nick. Coming in to bat after the fall of opener Vikram Solanki, the left-handed batsman played a marvellous innings. Striking the ball well, he played some glorious strokes. Largely untroubled during the entire innings and playing a wide array of strokes, he notched up a whirlwind 39-ball 64 studded with three sixes and seven imperious fours.

It was his stand with opener S. Paul that laid a solid foundation for a big score. Paul also played his part admirably and contributed 41-ball 50. Left-handed Kiran Powar did not let the momentum fall and played a 27-run cameo as Mumbai Champs posted 187.

For Kolkata Tigers, Lance Klusener was the most successful bowler claiming two wickets.

Chasing this total, most of Kolkata Tigers batsmen got off to starts, but failed to convert them into big innings. Opener Deep Dasgupta and Darren Maddy gave the team a reasonable start, but failed to carry on. Dasgupta, who scored 32, was the highest scorer from the side.

Skipper McMillan played a couple of meaty strokes which rocketed to the fence before he fell at 29. Rohan Gavaskar promised much, clobbering huge sixes off Vikram Solanki and Nathan Astle but failed to prolong his stay at the wicket.

Khanolkar held on to a fierce off drive played from the meat of the blade by Lance Klusener. Khanolkar showed enough agility and completed a superb catch after the ball richotted off his hands.

The asking rate proved too tough for tailenders as Tigers could reach 180 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs, handing Champs their first win.

A beaming skipper Brian Lara said that team effort made the victory possible. “The batters batted well putting up an impressive total on the board, they fielded well effecting good saves and holding on to smart catches, while bowlers provided us breakthroughs at the right time,” Lara said after the match.

“Khanolkar was very impressive with the bat. He and Paul batted well, enabling us to put a good total on the board,” the batting legend said of the Man of the Match, who played a key role in Mumbai Champs registering their first victory in the competition, first scoring a scintillating 67, the highest score from the side, and then pulled off a superb catch at long-on to send back Lance Klusener.

“Vikram Solanki effecting a run out came at the right time.” Solanki showed great agility and unleashed a powerful throw from the deep to the wicketkeeper, who whipped off the bails in a jiffy and the third umpire verdict ruled Upul Chadana out.

Lara defended the inclusion of some new faces like Suyush Burkul, Nikhil Mandale and P. Joshi in the team, saying that they also needed a break.

“I was a bit apprehensive about the new players introduced by the skipper, but I backed him fully,” Mumbai Champs coach Sandip Patil said.

“We were desperate for the victory. Though it came late, I am pleased with the efforts by boys put in,” the former swashbuckling middle order batsman observed.

“Though Shreyas (Khanolkar) batted very well, the credit also goes to the other members of the team, who put in fine efforts,” Patil said.

“It was like a bullet shot,” said Man of the Match Shreyas Khanolkar of the catch he took at long-on off seamer S. Burkul resulting in the dismissal of Lance Klusener as the fielder fumbled, nearly dropping it before regaining his composure to finally complete it gleefully.

Vandort leads Lanka recovery

Colombo, December 10
Michael Vandort scored an unbeaten 50 as Sri Lanka shook off a poor start to close on 105 for two, 246 runs behind England, on the second day of the second Test on Monday.

England were earlier bowled out for 351 after resuming on 258 for five with Matt Prior hitting 79 and Muttiah Muralitharan claiming his 62nd five-wicket haul in Tests.

Left-armer Ryan Sidebottom gave Sri Lanka a scare before tea with a penetrative new-ball burst, reducing the hosts to 22 for 2 as both Upul Tharanga (10) and in-form Kumar Sangakkara (1) edged outswingers to wicketkeeper Prior.

But Vandort and skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who finished on 43 not out, batted throughout the final session during an unbroken 83-run stand before bad light stopped play.

Prior scored 79 from 130 balls with nine boundaries as England added 93 runs to their overnight score before being bowled out in the first hour after lunch.

Off-spinner Muralitharan polished off the tail in quick succession to finish with 5-116 from 47.2 overs.

England lost the wickets of Paul Collingwood (52) and Stuart Broad (2) as they added 69 runs during the two-hour morning session.

Chaminda Vaas broke through in the first hour as he followed a series of leg-cutters with a full-length inswinger that Collingwood left alone and was adjudged lbw.

Soon after, Lasith Malinga trapped debutant Broad with another inswinger.

After Kevin Pietersen’s disputed catch on day one, there was further controversy regarding the use of technology just before lunch as umpire Daryl Harper referred a slip catch off Sidebottom to third umpire Gamini Silva.

The catch was taken cleanly by Mahela Jayawardene diving forward at slip, but Silva ruled not out on the basis that he was not sure that the ball had brushed the glove as Sidebottom took evasive action.

Prior and Sidebottom extended their useful eighth-wicket partnership to 74 before Muralitharan had Sidebottom caught at slip for 17.

Steve Harmison top-edged a sweep first ball to be caught by Chamara Silva and Prior was last man out as he was caught and bowled by Murali.

Malinga finished with 3-78 from 24 overs and Vaas claimed 2-68 from 32 overs.

Test headed for a draw
Zaheer Abbas

The Bangalore Test looks headed for a draw. Given the size of India's first innings total, it will be a creditable result for Pakistan and they have batted well in this match. And with just another 58 runs needed to avoid the follow-on, we can pretty well safely pencil this game down as another no-result.

Though none of the Pakistan batsmen have yet reached a century, as compared to three from the Indian side, it has been a gritty effort. It was important for the team not to lose a wicket early and Salman Butt and Younis Khan buckled down to the job well.

They were both unlucky to miss out on individual hundreds, but they achieved the first task, of consolidation extremely well, especially in the morning session.

Younis in particular looked in good nick to reach yet another century at this venue — the last time he batted here, the Pakistan captain came away with a mammoth 267 — but a fleeting lapse of judgement cost him his wicket. The reverse sweep is always a tricky shot even for a well-set batsman simply because if the bowler is on target and you miss, he hits.

That was to be the only wicket for Harbhajan Singh, while Anil Kumble had no luck at all, through the day.

In a sense I can understand the lack of urgency on the part of the Indians. They are ahead in the series and have piled up a huge score here, big enough to ensure that they cannot lose this game, and it is entirely up to Pakistan to make the running.

With the wicket not providing any assistance to the bowlers, Pakistan's batsmen played themselves in. Clearly they have assessed the situation well in that the ball occasionally keeps low and are countering that with a big forward stride that makes it extremely difficult for the umpires to call a leg-before decision.

All the batsmen were rapped on the pads time and again, but because they are taking that big first stride, it largely negates the lbw danger.

What they must remember is to make sure they are attempting to play at the ball. Umpires nowadays are more ready to pull the trigger if a batsman does not look like he is trying to play a stroke, but by and large the umpiring in this Test match has been up to the mark.

Misbah-ul Haq and Kamran Akmal now have the job of first trying to knock off the 58 runs to avert the follow-on, and then built up the Pakistan total as close towards the Indian score as is possible. They have another ally in Mohammad Sami, who has not been able to do much with the ball in this series, but certainly has displayed buckets of determination with a bat in hand.

Unless something dramatic happens to this wicket overnight, I doubt that the Indian spinners will manage to extract anything from the surface.

It is extremely reminiscent of the track at Kolkata, and though Salman Butt managed to spin one ball right across the face of Irfan Pathan's bat yesterday, there has been absolutely no sign of support to the spinners thereafter.

It suggests to me that we will see — in all likelihood — a big Pakistan reply to India's total before the match peters out.

Every batsman who has not come good in this game — Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid and Laxman for India, and Mohammad Yousuf in particular for Pakistan — will feel that he has missed out on a chance to pile up the numbers and improve their career statistics a little.

Unfortunately though, such pitches tend to rob matches of interest because they curtail the chances of a result. And that cannot be a good thing for Test cricket, the hundreds and double-centuries notwithstanding.—Newswatch Asia

Case against Pawar dismissed
Tribune News Service

Hyderabad, December 10
In a major relief to the BCCI, the Andhra Pradesh High Court today dismissed a case against BCCI chief Sharad Pawar and five others regarding the alleged scam in the sale of tickets for the India-Australia ODI held in Hyderabad in October.

The court quashed the FIR registered against Pawar, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president and state minister G. Vinod, its secretary Shivlal Yadav and two others.

Justice G.V. Seetapathi held that there was no evidence to substantiate the allegations of irregularities in the sale of tickets for the third ODI held at Uppal stadium here.

The court order came on the basis of a petition filed by Pawar, Shah and others challenging the lower court order on registering an FIR against them.

The third metropolitan magistrate court here had on November 2 directed the city police to register an FIR against the cricket board officials based on a petition filed by former TDP Rajya Sabha member P. Radhakrishna.

The petitioner had alleged that only 15,000 out of the total 39,000 tickets were made available to the general public while the remaining were sold to VIPs, corporate organisations and others.

Narang shoots two silver medals

New Delhi, December 10
Gagan Narang had to settle for a silver medal in the men's 50m rifle prone event at the Asian Shooting Championships in Kuwait today.

Narang fired 595 out of 600 to be tied with Zhando Jia of China in the qualifying round but managed only 100.7 points in the final to be far behind the winner.

Jia shot 105.0 to win the competition while Duk Bing of Korea got the bronze medal with a score of 591+103.7.

Narang along with Sanjeev Rajput (589) and Surendra Singh Rathore (584) helped the Indian team to win the silver medal with a total of 1768. China claimed the gold medal with an aggregate of (1770) while bronze went to Japan (1766).

India has so far won four gold medals, eight silver and 10 bronze in the event, however, none of its shooters could book an Olympic berth in the last chance to qualify for the next year's quadranniel sporting extravaganza to be held in Beijing.

Sporting hold Salgaocar

Margao, December 10
Sporting Clube de Goa rallied hard to hold Salgaocar Sports Club to a 1-1 draw and split points in their fourth round ONGC I-League match played at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, here today.

Both goals came in the second half. Milagres Gonsalves scored for Salgaocar in the 49th minute, while Junior Elijah equalised in the 65th minute for Sporting Clube de Goa.

With this draw, both teams are now tied with two points each from four outings.

It was a tale of missed chances for both teams in the first half, in which Salgaocar had an edge.

Sporting initiated the first move as early as in the third minute when Cavin Lobo, after collecting a pass from striker Junior Elijah, unleashed a 20-yarder which was well collected by Salgaocar goalkeeper Margues.

Salgaocar came near scoring in the ninth minute but Francis Fernandes delayed a bit in heading the cross pass of Felix.

After a barren first half, Salgaocar regrouped themselves well and surged ahead in the 49th minute through Milagres Gonsalves off a cross pass from Felix. It was a freak goal.

Stung by the debacle, Sporting accelerated the pace of their game and managed to restore parity in the 65th minute through Junior Elijah off a well-measured pass from Denzil Franco to make it 1-1.

Youngmen recorded a narrow 1-0 victory against former champions Mughals in a Group B match of the Delhi Soccer Association Senior Division League at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.

Both teams managed several scoring opportunities, but only Youngmen managed to convert one, that too largely due to the efforts of their two foreign recruits, Olywasegun Samson Oyeleke and Uyiosa Kelvin Osadolor. Ravi Inder’s ton puts Punjab in control
Ashok Sethi

Amritsar, December 10
Punjab consolidated their position against Baroda and piled up a formidable total of 496 for 8 at stumps on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Super League - Group B match at the Gandhi Ground stadium here today.

Emulating the maiden century of his companion Karan Goel, Ravi Inder also notched up his first maiden hundred to pile misery on the Baroda team.

Resuming at the overnight score at 214 for 1, Baroda’s fast bowler Sunit Singh struck in the fourth over by claiming the wicket of Karan leg before wicket after he added 6 runs to his overnight tally of 121. The second wicket fell at the total of 226.

Skipper Pankaj Dharmani joined Ravi Inder and was at the crease for merely half an hour when he was out leg before wicket to Abhimanyu Chauhan for 13 runs and the third wicket fell at 257.

Ravi Inder playing with utmost caution and patience kept the scoreboard ticking with some superb shots. He scored his first century in 234 minutes with 15 fours. He along with Uday Kaul added 60 valuable runs and was finally out at 142 when he was caught by wicketkeeper Pinal Shah off the bowling of Sunit.

Kaul also perished soon after at his individual score of 29. Sunny Sohal and Ankur Kakkar came together and accelerated the scoring with Sohal scoring 55 runs in just 64 balls hammering two sixes and eight fours.

Later Gagandeep and Manpreet Gony added valuable runs to give Punjab a mammoth total of 496 for 8 at stumps.

Baroda bowlers Sankalp Vohra and Sunit Singh bowled their hearts out and picked up three and two wickets respectively while Yousuf Pathan scalped 2 Punjab batsmen.
