He was quoted in a section of the media, having said, the continued rights violations, particularly the frequent killing of the innocent persons in Kashmir valley, had forced them to think whether the accession with India was a right decision.

However, Farooq claimed he was "grossly quoted out of context".

He told The Tribune what he had meant was whether this was the price the innocent persons of Kashmir were paying for the accession with India. He remarked, "Farooq Abdullah needs no certificate of nationalism from anybody". Upset over the media reports he said he was surprised how such statements could be attributed to him when everybody knew about his "unwavering stand" about accession of the state with India.

Appreciating the media’s role in Jammu and Kashmir in the two decades of turmoil, director- general of police (DGP) Kuldeep Khooda stressed on coordination between the media and the police for the betterment of society.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar on "Police and Media" at Sher-e-Kashmir Police Academy here this morning, Khooda said both reporters and policemen usually faced pressure while discharging duties so both should understand each other’s problems.

He said sometimes skirmishes between media persons and cops occurred due to misunderstanding between both professionals. "We have to understand each other to develop cordial relation", he suggested and added cops should interact with media persons to remove understandings.

Terming media fourth pillar of democracy, Khooda said it was only media which could play an important role in creating awareness in society. "We appreciate analytical reports published or telecast by the media persons regarding the functioning of the Police Department", he said and suggested, “besides pinpointing weaknesses of the police positive role played by the cops in eradicating social evils should be highlighted". "While protecting lives of common citizens numbers of cops have laid down their lives. Media should also highlight stories of these brave
cops", he said.
