Jammu, November 17
Ahead of the visit of Mayawati, Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) chief and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, to Jammu tomorrow, the city has been
done up.

The BSP chief is expected to make important announcements at a rally in the city to infuse life into the state unit of the BSP ahead of the Assembly elections in the state next year.

In last Assembly elections in J&K, the BSP won only one seat in Kathua district; however, the candidate who won on the BSP ticket left the party and joined the PDP.

Other parties of the state will monitor the developments after the BSP chief’s visit to Jammu following the victory of the BSP in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

“No one had expected a clear majority for the BSP, but she did it and now she is eyeing Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir,” said a Congress leader.

“The entire city has become blue,” said Umesh Mangotra, a local resident.

Supporters here have erected huge hoardings with party flags and posters and in this process damaged roads by digging pits on the highway to fix pillars for the banners.

“They have spoiled the national highway at many places to welcome their leader,” lamented an officer of the state Road and Building Department. “Nobody has raised any objection because of the political clout of the people who did this.”

At many places the welcome hoardings and banners have proved to be a problem for pedestrians and for the vehicles that ply on these roads.

A party supporter in Jammu said, “This is just a matter of only one more day, after the rally is over we will remove all pillars and hoardings from the city and everything would be normal.”

Jammu, November 17
After a recent survey which revealed lack of interest amongst Indian students towards science as a career, the government of India with the help from the German government has launched a special train to educate students and infuse in them love for science and technology.

The special train, Science Express, being run by Indo-German co-operation, showcasing achievements of both countries in the field of science and technology, has arrived at Jammu Railway station and would be stationed here for five days.

On October 30 the Science Express was flagged of by the Indian Prime Minister and German Chancellor from Safdarjung Railway station in New Delhi.

The train, which is on an eight-month journey, will visit 57 cities of the country and cover all important stations of the country.

During her visit to India, German Chancellor Angela Markel had promised India support towards promoting “love for science” amongst students here.

“Today is our first day at Jammu Railway station and there is a huge rush of schools that bring their students to visit this train,” said Uttam.

“We have seven coaches in the train meant for educational and informational purpose. Students here are informed and educated on various aspects of science and technology and they show curiosity to learn more,” said Viral Makwana, a scientist with the centre.

Pre-1953 status not to be restored: Mirwaiz
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, November 17
Hurriyat Conference chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said there was no question of the restoration of pre-1953 position as it did not conform to aspirations of people of Jammu and Kashmir nor had it been supported by Pakistan. Involvement of all three parties was the only way to resolve the Kashmir issue, though proposals put forth needed discussions.

An APHC spokesman clarified Mirwaiz’s reported statement in a national daily yesterday, was in fact the elaboration of Musharraf’s four- point formula. "There is no question of the restoration of this administrative set-up (pre-1953) because relationship between Kashmir and India within the ambit of internal autonomy did not have Kashmiris’ approval nor Pakistan support."

Geelani said "ongoing movement" was not for the restoration of pre-1953 position, Haj House or the construction of railway track. Those for the ’53 position were speaking the language of mainstream political parties.
