Jammu, October 13
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is not an organ of Hindu hardline faction of the RSS and is not working on the agenda of the RSS as the SGPC is in direct ideological confrontation with the RSS. Avtar Singh, SGPC chief, stated this while addressing a religious congregation here this afternoon.

The SGPC chief, along with the Singh Sahibans (head priests) of the five Sikh Takhts (seats), was here for Amrit Sanchar Lehar (Sikh baptism) initiated by the SGPC in the country.

“Anti-panthic forces are spreading rumours that the SGPC has become an organ of the Hindu hardline faction of the RSS and is working on spreading its agenda. It’s not that we are not associated with the RSS, instead the SGPC is in direct confrontation with the RSS,” he said.

He added that the SGPC had initiated the “Amrit Chhako, Singh Sajjo Lehar” ( baptism movement) in the country so that all Sikhs should get baptised. “The movement of the lehar has got a tremendous response from the Sikh community. Members of the community in large numbers are coming to get baptised,” the SGPC chief said.

Without naming Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the SGPC chief said, “The Sikh sangat should remain vigilant about such deras which work against the Sikh Panth and it was high time we unite to show them our commitment towards Guru Granth Sahib.”

He also appealed to various Sikh factions which work on their own principles to unite, “People who are engaged in anti-panthic activities are actually harming the interests of the Sikh community. They should join us to help spread the message of Guru Granth Sahib among masses,” he said.

The SGPC chief donated Rs 5 lakh to Mahant Bachitter Singh Engineering and Technology College, Jammu, and said the committee would soon constitute a directorate for all educational institutes run by it.

The SGPC was keen on opening a separate degree college for Sikh girls in the Kashmir valley, but the local committee was not supporting it, he added.

A large number of Sikhs participated in the baptism here . Later, Avtar Singh was presented with ‘siropa’ by Mahant Manjeet Singh, head of Nagali Sahib dera, under the supervision of which the drive is being held in the state.

Checking stress: Jawans to get hi-tech accommodation
Tribune News Service

Jammu, October 13
To check increased stress amongst the soldiers and provide them with better accommodation when they return to peace stations Army has introduced a first of its kind of accommodation facilities for the soldiers

The state-of the-art accommodation project has been named Married Accommodation Project (MAP).

A first of its kind facility in the Army was inaugurated in Jammu by General Officer Commanding of Western Command Lieut-Gen Daljeet Singh at Sunjuwan military station in Jammu.

The facility will help de-stress soldiers as they live in state-of-the-art accommodation with their families after they finish tenure in militancy-affected areas.

In the first phase,100 such facilities have been constructed for which the government of India has allocated Rs 17,000 crore.

“Earlier, we had accommodation for married commissioned officers and junior commissioned officers, but soldiers deployed in frontier and militancy-affected areas had none. So the Ministry of Defence and Army headquarters took this project to de-stress the soldiers, by providing them an opportunity to live with their families” said Colonel P.S. Sogal technical adviser for MAP.

Apart from militancy, stress has been the major concern for the Army as many soldiers deployed in the militancy-hit areas have committed suicides or have turned guns towards their seniors.

“In the Army one does not get sufficient time for family, as the soldiers have to work in non-family stations. So the stress level of jawans is really high,” said Sogal.
