Upgraded school without teachers
Students hold protest march
Tribune News Service

Udhampur, October 5
Hundreds of locals today joined agitating students of Arnas Higher Secondary School who were protesting against the non-availability of teachers in the school. The school has been functioning without a principal and teachers despite the fact that leaders of the ruling parties have been taking credit for upgrading it.

For the past one year students of the school, located in the tehsil headquarters of Arnas of Reasi district, have been demanding the appointment of teachers for class XI and XII in the school as their study has been badly affected due to the non-availability of the teachers in some subjects.

As the authorities concerned are adopting delaying tactics in solving the problem, students today boycotted classes and held a protest march. As the march reached the town, shopkeepers and the locals joined the students. The march turned into a rally, which was addressed by the locals who warned the authorities against playing with the future of the students.

Arnas Higher Secondary School is the only such school in the area and is providing education to children of more than 50 villages of the tehsil. It was a long-pending demand of the area people to upgrade the school, which was earlier a high school. Although the school was upgraded, required staff was not provided.

There is no English teacher in the school despite the fact that English is a compulsory subject.

Besides, lecturers in science, Urdu or Hindi have not been provided.

LeT commander gunned down

Srinagar, October 5
A self-styled district commander of Lashker-e-Toiba was killed by security forces during a gun battle in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir today, the third successful operation against the outfit in as many days.

The LeT commander, Abu Furkan of Pakistan, was shot dead by the Rashtriya Rifles at Manzkhah-Chitragam, Senior Superintendent of Police, Pulwama, Nitish Kumar said.

He said security forces had laid multiple ambushes in the area following a tip-off.

Nitish Kumar said a fake identity card was recovered from the slain militant in which his name is given as Ghulam Ahmad Renu, a resident of Nowpoch-Marwah village of Kishtwar.

However, the SSP said details regarding his real identity and involvement in militancy-related incidents were being verified, since Furkan was appointed the district commander just 10 days ago after the elimination of Abdul Hai Rather, alias Kubaib by the police.

Terming it a “very successful operation”, which will dent the LeT further in south Kashmir, Nitish said some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the slain militant. — PTI
