Panchari (Udhampur), September 20
Although Kashmir Valley is famous for its apples, the Horticulture Department of this district has decided to bring special variety of plants from neighbouring Himachal to develop apple belt in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Horticulture Department has to import apple plant from Himachal because the farmers of Panchari and Lander belt of Udhampur district have been demanding it. Furthermore climatic conditions of this belt of Udhampur district and those of some apple-growing areas of Himachal are almost similar so the authorities are sure of developing an apple belt in Jammu region on the lines of the neighbouring state.

``On experimental basis we have decided to import 300 apple plants from government institutes of Himachal. These plants will be planted as progeny orchard'', J. L. Raina, chief horticulture officer said, adding, `` later budding and grafting of these plants will be done here''.

On reasons of importing apple plants from Himachal , Raina a deputation of the farmers, who had gone to the neighbouring state, was so impressed by the progress made by that state in horticulture sector, were of the view that variety of Himachal was only suitable for Udhampur and adjoining areas. On the demand of the farmers we have decided to import some plants from Himachal, he said and hoped the experiment would help develop apple belt in the new area.

Climatic conditions of Panchari and Lander areas of Udhampur district are similar to that of some areas of Himachal . Since long, authorities have been trying to develop this belt as apple growing area but of no avail. Some time back the Horticulture Department had organised a visit of local farmers to Himachal. The visit was an eye-opener for the farmers as they were impressed by the progress made by their counter-parts in Himachal.

Being one of the most backward areas of Udhampur district, inhabitants of this belt were of the view farming on the pattern of Himachal would help their economic uplift.

After returning from that tour, farmers had been demanding import of special variety of apple plant from Himachal.

The farmers are also demanding development of other varieties of cash crops which are suitable for this belt. When this demand was raised by the farmers during Janta Darbar at Panchari, deputy commissioner, Udhampur O. P. Kalandari asked officers of the Horticulture Department to take steps in this regard.

The DC has also directed the department concerned to develop an agriculture complex at Panchari to train farmers of this district.

2 get life term for killing sibling, wife

Jammu, September 20
Two brothers were awarded life imprisonment by a court here today for killing their sibling along with his wife over a land dispute 10 years ago.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge, Jammu, Puneet Gupta also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Ajit Singh, alias, Jeeta and Bishan Singh, alias, Kaku of R S Pura.

Kasturi Lal and his wife Lajwanti were killed on October 2, 1997 in front of their two minor children, when they had visited the accused persons’ agricultural farm in order to settle a land dispute.

Pronouncing the judgement, the court observed that it can imagine the adverse and everlasting impact that may have remained in the minds of the minor children of the unfortunate couple as they witnessed their parents dying in no time in front of their eyes because of the attack engineered by the accused without any provocation from the victim.

Having this factor in mind, the court may jump to the conclusion that the accused are liable to be awarded death sentence under Section 302 of the Ranbir Panel Code and any punishment lesser than that may not meet the ends of justice. — PTI

Jammu, September 20
Doctors at the Military Hospital here have performed sutureless cataract surgery using phacoemulsification technique without giving anaesthesia.

Lt Col S.D.Goswami, Defence PRO said Lt Col Shrikant Waikar superspecialist performed this surgery under local anaesthesia by using a few eye drops to prevent pain.

The surgery was performed in the moving eye. The patient, who underwent this surgery, was blind in one eye due to cataract. She regained complete vision on the very next day after surgery.

Under phacoemulsification technique the operation is performed through a small 2.8mm incision and foldable lens is implanted. No stitches are given. Usually the eye has to be anaesthetised by giving an injection before performing the surgery. This injection can have several complications like haemorrhage and even perforation of the eyeball. By performing this operation using eye drops instead of injection for anaesthesia all complications of the injection can be ruled out.

Department of Ophthalmology headed by Lt Col Ashish Saksena has performed over 1,000 phacoemulsification surgeries since last year.
