Youth’s death sparks protest against doctors

Udhampur, July 11
The death of a youth, allegedly due to the negligence of doctors, triggered a protest in the town. People gathered in the hospital premises and demonstrated against the doctors for, what they called, killing a youth.

The agitating people took away the body only after the hospital authorities announced to constitute a two-member board to ascertain the cause of the death of the youth.

“We have constituted a board comprising two doctors to enquire into the case'', Dr K. K. Gupta, medical superintendent of the Udhampur hospital, told The Tribune. He, however, said preliminary investigation revealed the youth died to the bursting of a nerve.

According to family members, 31-year-old youth Rajinder Kumar, son of Om Parkash of Jib village, had pain in the stomach and was taken to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. After giving him some treatment, the doctors discharged the patient from the hospital and declared him normal. At midnight, Rajinder again complained of severe pain in the stomach and he was rushed to the hospital.

The family members further alleged that instead of properly diagnosing the problem of the patient, the doctors injected some medicine. At about 2.45 am, when the condition of Rajinder deteriorated, they conducted some medical tests. But it was too late and the youth died at about 5 am.

Irked over the casual approach of the doctors, villagers from Jib and adjoining localities thronged the hospital and demonstrated there. They were demanding action against the doctors.

The medical superintendent and other senior officers reached the spot and pacified the villagers. The villagers took away the body after the medical authorities announced that the a board of doctors would find the cause of the death of the youth.

Protests against security forces
Authorities to review strategy
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, July 11
Series of incidents, which have led to street fights between people and law-enforcing agencies in the valley after a long lull, have made the authorities, especially the Army, review their strategies.

Senior Army officials told The Tribune that they suspected a link in the events which had brought people on the road against them. "Pressure on the government for de-militarisation was being ratcheted up and these mishaps are only an extension to them," an officer claimed. He conceded that they were thinking on these lines largely due to circumstantial evidence.

Almost 10 days after two jawans were paraded by people in Bandipore,65 km north of Srinagar, after they made an alleged rape bid on a girl in her house, people were again on streets in Kangan, close to the capital city, when they found an jawan cozying up to a local girl.

Finding himself besieged, the jawan shot himself after firing at the crowd, killing one person. The protest has been going on there for the past several days. Army officials said it was unprofessional on their part to develop intimate relations with the local population, and in the prevailing situation it was like adding fuel to the fire.

The local population often complains that they are subjected to unnecessary inconveniences by the forces, and the anger may be now spilling over. The propensity of the Army to summarily dismiss allegations against its men, even if subsequent probe finds some validity in the charges, do not help matters either. Army sources said they were aware of these matters and had taken measures to make their men behave.
