Day II: BSNL fails to connect

BSNL today put into service more than 150 officials to repair the exchange which was burnt yesterday in a major fire. While till late today around 80 per cent of mobile connections had been restored, the rest of the services like banking, internet etc were still paralysed.

Samjhauta Blast
India to pay compensation on July 5
Islamabad, July 1
India will pay a compensation ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 45 lakh to relatives of 27 Pakistanis, who died in the Samjhauta Express blasts on July 5. Preliminary compensation to the tune of Rs 50,000 has already been paid to the relatives of the victims, an Indian High Commission official here said.

Tempo crushes six to death at chhabeel site

At least six persons were killed and seven others injured seriously when a tempo crushed them while they were serving sweetened water to passersby at a chhabeel organised by residents of Sayan village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road, near here, today.

Pak reciprocates, frees 50 fishermen
Karachi, July 1
A day after India freed 43 Pakistani prisoners, Islamabad today reciprocated by releasing 50 Indian fishermen who were detained for allegedly entering its waters in the Arabian Sea. "The prisoners will be handed over to the Indian authorities at the Wagah border tomorrow," head of the Ansar Burney Welfare Trust Saram Burney told PTI.

Jagjit Singh and his family are the only Sikhs in Tharparkar, the home of Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, who have registered to vote according to the newly-published updated electoral lists which have evoked countrywide criticism for dropping more than 20 million voters from the lists on which elections were held in 2002.
