Gujjars to oppose Paharis’ demand for ST status
Rajouri, June 4 Although Paharis, who form a sizeable population in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch besides some of their populace living in Baramula and Kupwara districts in Kashmir valley have been fighting for ST status since 1990's but have failed to get it due to opposition by Gujjars, (who feel that if the government gives ST status to Paharis, their share in the reservations for Scheduled Tribes will go down) who till now have succeeded in putting pressure on government against such a move. Now, getting a cue from the success of Gujjars' agitation in Rajasthan, Paharis are planning mass movement for their demand of ST status and in fact have started closed- door meetings to mobilise community support for such mass struggle. Sources revealed recently the Jammu and Kashmir Pahari Welfare Forum (JKPWF) held two such meetings in Rajouri and Poonch districts. "While as the meeting here was held under the leadership of its district president Muhammad Shahbaz Khan, the meeting in Poonch was held with Lokesh Kumar Sharma in Chair", sources said. "Unique aspect about both these meetings was the large presence of Pahari youths". Sources added Sharafat Ali Khan, chairman JKPWF is also likely to tour Rajouri and Poonch for formulating the strategy for the mass movement. Though Muhammad Shahabaz Khan confirmed the holding of meetings, but he refused to divulge the agenda of such meetings. Meanwhile with the Paharis planning a mass struggle for ST status, Gujjars too are pulling their socks up and are reportedly planning a counter agitation to apply pressure on government against any such move. "If any such benefit is given to the Paharis from our share, we will oppose it tooth and nail", warned Muhammad Iqbal Choudhary, senior Gujjar leader and district president, All -India Confederation of SC/ST and OBC. "It is the question of fate of lakhs of Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir. If the government takes any such step, we will not keep silent". If Sources are to be believed, if the Paharis launch mass movement for the ST status, the Gujjars too will go for counter offensive and the situation in the state in general and these twin border districts in particular may go out of control. In Jammu and Kashmir state, Gujjars have 10 per cent reservation under the Scheduled Tribe category and there has been bitterness between them and Paharis' for SC status for the past three decades. |

''The Singh Sahibaan (Sikh clergy) are taking up the cause for the closure of deras in Punjab and Haryana and, thus, they should inspect similar kind of deras in Jammu also where the mahants are exploiting people in the name of religion and following anti-Sikh practices on their premises,'' JDGPC general secretary Gudev Singh told The Tribune here. He said the Sikh high priests in Amritsar gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured them the Sikh religious practices would not be compromised at any cost. The Sikh organisations, which also include the Jammu units of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), the Sikh Students Federation (Mehta) and the Sikh Naujawan Sabha have also urged the high priests such programmes of 'Amrit Sanchar' should be organized at the Singh Sabha gurdwaras or the historical gurdwaras and not on the premises of any dera.
