‘J-K infiltration on rise’ New Delhi, May 10 “We are aware of the fact that with the melting of ice in summers, there is a surge in infiltration,” he said on the sidelines of defence exhibition Defcom India. PDP, which is a Congress coalition partner in the state government, has been demanding reduction of troops in the state but this statement may well shelve any move from the centre’s side. Comments from the minister also come close to the warnings issued by various intelligence agencies, including Military Intelligence that militant groups based in Pakistan were having plans to infiltrate into the state in a big way. Incidentally, government has formed a committee to examine the issue of relocating troops from the state. The committee is headed by Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt. The minister also said the government had taken serious note of the banned LTTE’s attempts to obtain air power and its capability to carry out air strikes. His comments come close on the heels of government deciding to mobilise additional air force assets in south and step up surveillance, following fears that LTTE could carry out aerial attacks on Indian nuclear facilities. The decision to move more fighter jets and surveillance systems to south was taken at a high-level meeting chaired here by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. |
Removal of security pickets
Udhampur, May 10 Leader of Doda Swami Raj said the demilitarisation process was silently started in Doda district as authorities started withdrawing the troops from the isolated and far-flung areas. He gave the example of Mashala village in the Bhagwa area and Bueali belt comprising over 12 hamlets from where security pickets had been withdrawn. Echoing similar views Gian Singh of Dhar-Dashnana village said a picket of security forces was established at their village after the Kulhand massacre, but now they had been removed.“We will meet the DC of Doda before taking any step”,he said. Terming the situation in hilly areas as the worst,Swami Raj said it was an unwise decision of the authorities. “Militants had earlier made several attempts to attack these villages, but failed due to troops deployment”, he said and informed that most of the youths in these villages were working with security forces in anti-militancy operations. “After the winding up of pickets, these youths will become soft targets of militants'', he observed. — TNS |
PDP minister’s son roughs up govt officials
Srinagar, May 10 Ayaz Qazi, son of forest minister and senior PDP leader Qazi Mohammad Afzal, has been charged with physically assaulting government employees on duty, the sources said. They said the case was registered after three senior officers of the department— executive engineer Mansoor Ahmad, assistant executive engineer G.M. Shah and assistant engineer Nissar Ahmad - alleged they were roughed up by four persons led by the minister’s son at Lar village today. The officers claimed that they had gone to the village to look into allegations levelled by locals that the power transformer sanctioned for them was installed in another locality in violation of the government order. The officers were stopped by a group of five persons allegedly led by Ayaz Qazi, thrashed and forced to retreat. The minister, when contacted, said the name of his son was unnecessarly being dragged into the controversy. However, he said if an inquiry holds his son responsible he would not intervene and allow the law to take its own course. Without identifying anyone, the minister accused the executive engineer of working “at the behest of vested interests bent upon defaming him”. “The power department has sanctioned a 250 kv transformer at Lar village and in this connection the officials concerned had sought my suggestion for identification of the place for its instalment”, he said adding that he asked the officials to set up the transformer at the central stage so that all three localities could equally benefit. However, the minister said instead of installing the 200 kv transformer, the executive engineer installed a 100 kv transformer each at two localities, leaving another locality without power. The move irritated residents of the locality who staged a protest when the engineers visited the village, he added. — PTI |
