Award for DMCH doctor

The Rotary Foundation Alumnus Award was conferred on Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, professor and head of gastroenterology and medical superintendent at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Former governor of Uttaranchal Sudershan Aggarwal presented the award to Dr Chhina for his contribution in the field of medicine and gastroenterology, at the North-Zone Rotatory International conference held here recently.

As a convener of the health education cell at the DMCH, he has organised more than 50 lectures to create health awareness among the masses.

Dr Chhina did his doctorate in medicine in gastroenterology from PGIMER, Chandigarh. He has been participating in free medical and health check-up camps throughout the state.

1,000 examined

Hundreds of residents of villages, surrounding the sleepy town of Giddarbaha made it to a multi-speciality health camp, organised by SPS Apollo Hospitals, in collaboration with Public Welfare Club, Giddarbaha, in the memory of late Lala Laxman Das Ji Jumbe wale, on Sunday. According to the team of doctors, which conducted the medical check up, more than 1000 patients were examined during the day-long camp.

AIDS scenario ‘alarming’ in India

Terming HIV and AIDS very destructive, Dr K C Goel District Health Officer Sangrur has called upon the government medical staff to equip themselves with adequate knowledge before launching crusade against the dreaded disease.

After educating service providers, doctors and other paramedical staff, Dr K C Goel, DHO, Sangrur, apprehended that the menace, if goes unchecked, would engulf 45.4 million persons by 2010. The toll in second World War was estimated to be 43 million. Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts were reported to have claimed 70 thousand lives.

Dr Goel claimed developing positive attitude towards suspects and patients was more important than medical treatment as stigmatisation and discrimination had already multiplied the problem.

Poverty, illiteracy, ignorance, lack of awareness, unemployment, low social status of women and political instability were counted as other factors leading to proliferation of the disease, he claimed.

Leprosy survey begins

Ludhiana, March 19
Forty teams of two volunteers each commenced a house-to-house survey in several localities of the Daba Road area here today to detect leprosy cases. Those found afflicted with the disease would be referred to the nearest government health institution for treatment with multi-drug therapy.

The sub-divisional magistrate Amrit Kaur Gill flagged off the teams at a function, which was also attended by health officials and representatives of the World Health Organisation as well as the German Leprosy Relief Agency (GLRA), an NGO.

The team of volunteers, drawn from among nursing students of Dr B.L. Kapur Memorial Hospital and Guru Angad Dev Nursing Institute, would also carry with them pamphlets during their door-to-door visit of around 125 houses each day for the next four days to educate the people that leprosy was completely curable and treatment was available free of cost at all government health institutions and major private hospitals.

Dr B.D. Sharma and Dr Mathew, representatives of WHO and GLRA, respectively, provided caps and logistics to the teams of volunteers.

Prominent among those present on the occasion were district leprosy officer Dr G.K. Bansal, SMO Sahnewal Dr S.S. Dhir, Dr Anurag Choudhry and Dr Sangeeta from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, area councillor Surinder Sharma, M.S. Mann, Santosh Bhatia, Satbir Singh and Daniel.

Namdhari XI thrash EME 8-3

Namdhari XI, Bhaini Sahib, thrashed EME XI, Jalandhar, 8-3 on the second day of the 4th All-India Guru Gobind Singh Gold Cup Hockey Tournament being organised jointly by the Ludhiana Sportsmen Welfare Association and PAU Hockey Club under the patronage of the Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council at the Prithipal Singh Astro Turf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University here today.

Namdhari XI went ahead in the 8th minute through Jatinder Singh while Mahesh Kumar of EME scored the equaliser in the 13th minute. Gurpreet Singh put Namdhari XI again into the lead three minutes later and Jatinder struck in the 22nd minute to enhance the lead 3-1.

Namdhari players continued to raid their opponents' territory again and again. In the process, they pumped in three more goals through Karamjit Singh (28th minute), Sukhjinder Singh (30th minute) and Gurcharan Singh in the 32nd minute.

EME, Jalandhar, reduced the margin in the 45th minute when F Soreng sounded the board. However, two minutes later, Namdhari XI' Sumeet found the target to make it 7-2. Mandeep Singh of EME, Jalandhar scored a field goal to salvage some pride for his team (3-7). In the dying moments of the match, Sumeet added another goal to the tally to complete the rout 8-3.

The second match was played between Sikh Regiment XI, Delhi and PSEB, Patiala in which the former romped home 4-2. All the goals were scored in the second half.

Harjinder Singh put PSEB into the lead through a penalty corner conversion and Harjeet of Sikh Regiment immediately restored parity. PSEB men again went into the lead when Jatinderpal Singh successfully converted a penalty stroke.

Sikh Regiment's Harjeet Singh and Suman K Menz scored in quick succession which sealed PSEB XI's fate 4-2.

Tomorrow's matches: Namdhari XI vs Indian Airlines at 1 pm and Sikh Regiment vs Air India at 3 pm
