Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today said he would move a petition in the Supreme Court requesting that the trial of corruption cases against Parkash Singh Badal be shifted to a court outside Punjab as a fair trial was not possible under the present dispensation.

PIL to put cases against CM, MLAs on fast track
Chandigarh, March 5
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notices to newly-sworn in Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, his predecessor Capt Amarinder Singh, some ministers and others on a PIL seeking speedy trial of criminal cases pending against them in various courts.

The last day of the Hola Mohalla was dominated by Nihangs who displayed their martial art skills and later organised a procession here last evening. However, two Nihangs, Balwinder Singh of Dashmesh Tarna Dal, Sangrur, and Major Singh of Guru Nanak Tarna Dal, Batala, were seriously injured when their horses collided.

Chandigarh, March 5
The newly elected Punjab Congress MLAs today authorised party chief Sonia Gandhi to name the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the state. The meeting of the legislators here was presided over by state unit chief Shamsher Singh Dullo, who contested unsuccessfully from the Khanna Assembly constituency.

Beas poll: 50 cops protect Akali candidate
Badal to camp in Beas from March 7
Beas, March 5
After allotting portfolios among his colleagues, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, will be camping in Beas from March 7 to address of rallies in favour of the Akali candidate , Beas goes to polls on March 11. The Beas election was put off following the killing of an Akali activist on January 29.

Kalia promises transparent government

The Punjab once again will be number one state, which came down to number five position, during five-year rule of the Congress, Manoranjan Kalia, a BJP minister said during his thanks giving visit to the city here yesterday. He said it would be their priority to take up major development projects in the state.

Akalis take control of 3-truck union
Barnala, March 5
The Akalis took control of the three-truck unions falling in the district in a single day today. Such unions are the easiest available source of power and money. That can easily be understood with today’s result. Former SAD MLA Malkeet Singh Keetu played a major role in dethroning the existing presidents. His son, Kulwant Singh, has been elevated to the position of the president of the local truck union.

Saka elected Malerkotla MC chief
Malerkotla, March 5
Sangrur DC S.R. Laddar today declared the result of the election of the local municipal council. Mohammad Ishaq Saka of the Congress was elected president of the municipal council. Saka got 21 votes out of total 27, while Mohammad Zahid got six votes.

Eight shops gutted
Amritsar, March 5
Eight shops were gutted in a fire, occurred due to a blast in a cylinder, in the old bus stand area of the Majitha yesterday. However, no loss of life was reported in the incident.

MC EO summoned by Information Commission
Sangrur, March 5
For not supplying complete information to Kamal Anand under the Right to Information Act, the State Information Commission Punjab has directed public information officer (PIO)-cum-executive officer (EO) of the Municipal council (MC) here Ranbir Singh to appear in person on the next date of hearing (March 12) besides supplying the information to the complainant.

Bail plea rejected, district attorney on the run
Ludhiana, March 5
The anticipatory bail application of district attorney (prosecution) Amar Ashok Pathak has been rejected by the court of additional sessions judge Gurbir Singh. Pathak has not reported for duty since then.

Businessman shot at; ex-DSP, 20 others booked

Former DSP Nishan Singh Sandhu and 20 other armed supporters of his have been booked for shooting at and injuring local entrepreneur Harjinder Singh Dhillon. Land dispute between the two was stated to be the reason behind the incident.

Man beaten to death
Abohar, March 5
Nek Pal (22),son of Punchhi Ram, a resident of Street 6 in Indira Nagri here, was allegedly beaten to death when he tried to prevent residents from throwing colours on his younger brother during the Holi celebrations yesterday.

With the help of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha, Surrey, BC, Canada, the department of Gurmat sangeet, Punjabi University, has planned to set up a "Bhai Randhir Singh online Gurmat sangeet library" at the Gurmat Sangeet Bhavan in the university.
