Crucial week for state

Come Tuesday and the future of not only politics, but also socio-economic development of Punjab will be decided. The counting of votes for 116 of the 117 assembly seats on Tuesday morning will not only unveil a new political regime in the state but also set into motion heightened activity, ushering in a series of appointments.

Cabinet to dissolve House today
Chandigarh, February 25
The Punjab council of ministers will meet here tomorrow to formally dissolve the 12th Vidhan Sabha. The ministers will be free to submit their resignations any time after that, and that could be till February 27, the day of counting.

Samjhauta blasts fail to wake Pathankot railway authorities
Pathankot, February 25
Even after the Samjhauta Express blasts the authorities at the sensitive Pathankot railway station appears in no mood to learn their lesson. There is no one to monitor the activities at the railway station on the close-circuit camera installed there.

4 Pak nationals in India to search for relatives
Amritsar, February 25
Four Pakistani nationals crossed over to India through the Wagah joint check-post to know the whereabouts of their missing relatives today. Mohammad Latif Sheikh, Raheesh Ahmad, Wasim Ahmad, all from Lahore, and Mohammad Iqbal of Narowal said they had to come to know about their relatives who had come to India a month ago.

The charred body of a married woman was found from the roof of the house in the Sarai locality today morning. The house where this incident took place is located in a congested locality of Pathankot.

Land grab: SSP told to complete probe in three months
Abohar, February 25
While issuing notice of motion to the state of Punjab, SSP, Ferozepore, and SHO, city police station here, Mr Justice Virender Singh of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked the SSP to ensure that the investigation of the case relating to the alleged land grab is completed at the earliest, but not more than three months.

His sketches help police nab criminals

Gobind Ram, a 25-year old butcher in Ludhiana, walked into a police station to complain about his stolen motorcycle. To his utter shock, he was arrested within minutes of having entered the police station for being member of a dreaded gang of murderers who had recently committed a double murder in a jewellers’ family.

PSEB panel on payment for substandard coal
Ropar, February 25
Just before the formation of the new government in the state, the Punjab State Electricity Board  has formed a five-member committee to sort out the controversial issue of release of withheld payment worth several crores for the Chinese imported coal, test samples of which were found to be substandard.

Ferozepore, February 25
If given chance I would love to cross over to Pakistan to spread the message of peace and tranquility through religious discourses, stated sant Murari Bapu while talking to mediapersons at the National Martyrs Memorial, Hussaniwala, 12 km from the district headquarters here yesterday.

Abohar, February 25
A team from the department of health last evening sealed a dental clinic located in Street 8 here in compliance of the order passed by the District Consumers Grievances Redressal Forum.

Social worker alleges harassment
Rajpura, February 25
A 70-year-old social worker Ajaib Singh, has alleged harassment at the hands of an employee of the district courts here in connivance with the police. In a complaint to the Patiala SSP, Ajaib Singh alleged that a false complaint was lodged against him by the employee.

The Federation of Arhtiyas Association, Punjab, and leaders of farmer unions at a meeting at Sunam have sought Rs 200 per quintal enhancement in the minimum support price of wheat during the ensuing procurement season.

Acid thrown on 4 members of family
4-yr-old boy dies, 3 sustain injuries
Sangrur, February 25
Four members of a family - husband, wife and their two sons - received burn injuries on different parts of their bodies last night when some miscreants reportedly threw acid on them when they were sleeping in their house at Kanakwal Kalan village, about 15 km away from Sunam.

Gang of swindlers busted
Amritsar, February 25
With the arrest of three persons, the district police today claimed to have busted a gang of cheaters, who used to defraud the people on pretext of doubling the money. The accused were identified as Paramjit Singh, Sona Singh and Partap Singh Bhagtupura, while three of their accomplices including Amrik Singh, Mukhtiar Singh and Satnam Singh managed to escape.

Man arrested for raping daughters
Amritsar, February 25
In a bizarre incident a resident of Himmatpurae was arrested for allegedly raping two of his daughters. The police registered a case under section 376 of the IPC following a complaint lodged by the girls at C-division police station here today.

Widow’s gangrape: probe begins
Kapurthala, February 25
The Punjab Human Rights Organisation today started investigation into the gangrape of a Valmiki widow by members of the same community after parading her naked in Kala Sanghia village on Friday.

Undertrial escapes, held
Bathinda, February 25
An undertrial, who had escaped from the police custody yesterday, was arrested again within 24 hours of the incident. A constable who produced him in the court yesterday has also been arrested.

Missing youth’s body found
Muktsar, February 25
The body of an 18-year-old youth, who went missing 13 days back was today, recovered from a distributary in a mutilated condition. Sources said deceased Vipan Kumar was taking coaching classes for the engineering entrance test from a private academy here.

Murder case solved
Amritsar, February 25
The district police today claimed to have solved a blind murder case of Khalsa College student Jarnail Singh whose body was found in the fields of the college campus on February 9.

A medical girl student of Government Medical College here has been suspended for violating college rules and regulations and indulging in indisciplinary activities. Principal of the college, J.S. Dalal, confirming this, said that the girl was suspended from the college and the hostel with immediate effect till further action.
