Custodial death: police, villagers clash
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 17
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has ordered a judicial probe into the alleged custodial death of a youth at Satwari police station while two cops have been suspended.

Tarsem Lal, alias Soni, a resident of Falali Mandal village, near Jammu, died at the police station on the city outskirts this morning. He was picked up by the police from his home at 9 am, members of the bereaved family said, demanding a judicial probe into the matter.

Villagers laid a siege to the police station and pelted the cops with stones. They burnt a mini-truck of the police. The cops had to fire in the air to disperse the mob.

Assistant Sub-inspector Deepak Sharma and Head Constable Mehmood have been suspended.

Meanwhile, state Home Secretary B. R. Kundal said the Chief Minister had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the alleged custodial death, which would be conducted within one week. It had been assigned to the District Magistrate of Rajouri.

Geelani to meet Kasuri on Feb 22
Tribune News Service

Srinagar, February 17
The hardline APHC chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, currently on a visit to the Jammu region, will fly to New Delhi on Tuesday, ahead of his meeting with the visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri.

The meeting is scheduled to be held on February 22, while other separatist Kashmiri leaders, moderate APHC chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, JKLF chief, Mohammad Yaseen Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah will meet him on February 23.

The meeting with different separatist Kashmiri leaders is regarded as significant in view of the ongoing dialogue between the two neighbouring countries, following the recent visit of the Mirwaiz-led APHC delegation to Pakistan late last month. The meetings with Kasuri are also believed to be pivotal for forging a unity among the divergent separatist groups in the valley.

After parting ways from the Mirwaiz-led Hurriyat Conference following last Assembly elections and the opening of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service two years ago, Geelani had been criticising the Pakistan leadership for a change in its stance on Kashmir issue. He had been opposed to the talks with the Pakistan leadership in view of the developments on Indo-Pak dialogue process and turned down the invitation to visit Pakistan last year.

A five-member delegation of the Mirwaiz-led APHC and JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yaseen Malik, visited Pakistan and PoK in June last year via the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road.

Geelani, who has not visited Pakistan, particularly during the last couple of years when the dialogue process had been set into motion, among other separatist leaders met the Pakistan President, Gen Pervez Musharraf, during his last India visit.

There is no agenda for Mr Geelani’s scheduled meeting with the visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister, a spokesman of the hardline Hurriyat Conference told this correspondent. While Geelani would be holding a one-to-one meeting with Mr Kasuri, he would get to know the Pakistan Government’s stand on the resolution of the Kashmir issue, the spokesman said.

Omar seeks ‘truth panel’
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 17
Mr Omar Abdullah, president of the National Conference (NC), has urged the government to set up a “truth and reconciliation commission” to probe the terrorism and human rights violations both by security forces and militants during the past 17 years.

Mr Abdullah said here today that the governments of India and Pakistan should consider the commission on the post-apartheid pattern of South Africa.

He said the commission should also probe the custodial killings, disappearance of persons and alleged involvement of Pakistan in militancy. It should also look into the migration of the Kashmiri youth to Pakistan.

During his recent visit to Islamabad, Mr Abdullah said, he found more than 1,000 such youths had settled in Pakistan after receiving arms training. The government should devise some confidence building measure for their dignified return to India.

He said the Congress-PDP coalition government had failed to prevent custodial killings and disappearance of the youth.
