Separatists invited to meet Kasuri in Delhi
Srinagar, February 15 They include the leaders of both factions of the Hurriyat Conference, hardline chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani and moderate Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, JKLF chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP). The JKLF chairman is already in the Union Capital after his three-day-long hunger strike here in protest against the human rights violations at the hands of the police and the security forces in Kashmir. Accepting the invitation, Mr Geelani today said his party’s stand on the resolution of the Kashmir issue was clear and it would be put forth before the visiting Foreign Minister
of Pakistan. He reiterated his stand on the resolution of Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir by granting them the right of self-determination under the UN resolutions. He denied reports that the meeting of the visiting separatist Kashmiri leaders was aimed at unity of the divergent separatist groups in Kashmir. Mr Geelani headed the Hurriyat Conference before parting ways in the wake of the 2002 Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after which he has been heading the breakaway faction. PDP condemns custodial killing
Jammu, February 15 In a statement issued here today, a PDP spokesman, while expressing anguish over the cold-blooded murder of the Rajouri youth, has called for immediate measures to put an end to such acts of highhandedness that add to the alienation of the masses. The spokesman said while it was satisfying that immediate administrative action had been taken against officials involved in the killing, stern action should be taken against such elements who had no value for human life. Coming as it did after recent reports of loss of lives in similar circumstances at Tral and Shopian, the incident at Rajouri assumed even more serious dimension, he said. The spokesman said the government should devise a foolproof system of checks and balances to avoid repetition of such brutal acts. It was a matter of concern that such incidents were taking place even at a time when the human rights situation in the state was under full public and media focus. The serious action against the perpetrators of fake encounters in Kashmir initiated by the coalition government should have served as a deterrent, he said, but unfortunately such incidents continued to take place across the state. The spokesman said it was in this background that the PDP had made a firm demand to revoke the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which created an atmosphere of impunity and a wavered tendency among some elements in the security forces and the police against such crimes. The spokesman said peace with dignity was the fundamental of the PDP agenda and it had been launched with the sole aim of achieving a lasting solution to the Kashmir problem through dialogue and discussion and for setting up a structure conducive to its economic development. |
