Srinagar, February 3
Three more bodies were exhumed from two different locations today by the special investigating team of the Jammu and Kashmir police for carrying out DNA tests to ascertain the identity of those missing and killed in fake encounters.

The family members of two other civilians whose bodies were exhumed earlier have identified the corpses. Meanwhile, forensic experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Chandigarh, have taken samples to confirm their identities in accordance with the state government’s orders. Protest demonstrations were held by thousands of people against the killings while the authorities were in the process of exhuming the body of Ali Mohammad Paddar at Kangan near here this afternoon. Two bodies were exhumed today from a graveyard at Bazipora, Ajas, 42 km from here on the Srinagar-Bandipore road in Baramulla district. One of these was believed to be that of Shoukat Ahmad Kataria, a cleric from Banihal in Doda district, who had been leading prayers at a mosque at Zadibal. He had been missing since October 4 last year and killed on the intervening night of October 4 and 5.

Another body was identified by the relatives as that of Ghulam Nabi Wani, son of Ghulam Qadir Wani from Larnoo, Kokernag in Anantnag district. His brother Zahoor Ahmad Wani and wife Haleema accompanying the police team identified his body.

Wani was a vendor outside Tyndale Biscoe School in the central Lal Chowk area and had been missing since March 2 last year.

Incidentally, Abdul Rahman Paddar, whose missing and subsequent killing took the lid off the whole affair, also belonged to the same village in south Kashmir. Taking assistance of the forensic experts from the CFSL, the special investigating team also exhumed the body of Ali Mohammad Paddar from a graveyard at Kangan, 40 km from here on Srinagar-Ladakh axis. The body, beyond recognition, was identified by physical appearances and clothes by his wife Shameema and brother Abdul Rashid. He had been missing since March 7 last year.

Srinagar, February 3
JKLF Chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik has threatened to go on a fast unto death in case the authorities failed to check the alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.

He called for a general strike on Tuesday when he begins three days’ hunger strike in protest against the “killing of innocent civilians in fake encounters at the hands of security forces in Kashmir”. He also called for a protest demonstration at Wailoo, Kokernag in Anantnag district, on Monday.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Malik expressed concern over the continued human rights violations in the state.

He alleged that 60,000 to 70,000 Kashmiri youths released from jails over the past 15 years were being forced to pick up arms again due to the pressure tactics, harassment and extortion by the security agencies.
