Hamirpur byelection
acid test for BJP, Congress
Shimla, January 11 Winning
the by-election will be crucial both for the Congress as well as the BJP
as the outcome of the election will reflect the voter’s mood. For the
BJP the stakes would be higher as retaining the seat for it would be an
uphill task as the ruling Congress will make corruption the main plank. The
name of Mr Chandel had figured in the cash-on camera scam, where some MP’s
were seen demanding money for asking questions in Parliament. Those MP’s
whose name had figured in the scam have already been disqualified by
Parliament and they had moved the Supreme Court. The Constitutional
Bench of the SC in its decision today unseated all these MP’s. Defeat in the Hamirpur parliamentary seat will sound death-knell for the Congress in the Assembly elections. Having to fight against the anti-incumbency factor, winning the Hamirpur seat could make things look brighter for the Congress in the Assembly elections. Ensuring
his party’s victory will be the biggest challenge for the former Chief
Minister and leader of the opposition, P.K. Dhumal, as Hamirpur happens
to be his home constituency. “In case of party’s defeat in Hamirpur
Lok Sabha election, there would be a question mark on the leadership of
Mr Dhumal and more importantly on his prospects of becoming the chief
minister of the state,” admitted a senior BJP, leader. The two main political parties which had been talking of wining the Shimla Municipal Corporation elections will now have to focus on the Hamirpur seat comprising Hamirpur, Una and Bilaspur districts. Mr Chandel had defeated Forest minister, Ram Lal Thakur in the Hamirpur Lok Sabha election. “The
BJP cannot dispute the fact that their MP, Chandel was shown accepting
money on camera and this issue can see the Congress through,” said a
senior Congress leader. |
Jai Ram’s charges unfounded: Cong
Shimla, January 11 Mr Rangila Ram Rao, Minister for Excise and Taxation, and Mr Tek Chand and Mr Surinder Pal, both legislators, in a joint statement here today, said the use of indecent and intemperate language against Mr Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, betrayed "lack of maturity" on the part of Mr Thakur who had been suddenly elevated to the top party post. The BJP had been all through pursuing its divisive ideology to achieve its narrow political ends. There was not even an iota of truth in the allegation. The fact was that the district had been getting priority in development under Mr Virbhadra Singh who opened several zonal offices in Mandi to provide a fillip to development activities. |
