Parking lots approval flouts ban
Shimla, December 22 While there is a complete ban on the construction in the green area and felling of trees, it appears that this does not apply to the government. |
Ban on polythene bags in tatters
Nurpur, December 22 The complete ban on polythene carrybags, below 70 microns in thickness, had encouraged entrepreneurs to set up small units for manufacturing paper-packaging bags. Over one dozen such automatic plants were set up in Kangra, Hamirpur and Una districts. Inquiries reveal that five out of fourteen units have closed so far thanks to the apathy of the state government, which did not enforce its ban on polythene carrybags in toto. These automatic units are not only generating employment opportunities through cottage industry but are also providing paper bags to the consumers as an alternative to polythene carry bags in most parts of the state. Alarmingly, banned polythene bags are being flooded from neighbouring Punjab that has imposed no ban on them. It seems both consumers and vendors are reluctant to get rid of polythene in the state. Under the Himachal Pradesh Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1995, the use of polythene carrybags, below 70 microns, has been banned. The state government has empowered as many as 18 government officials at the district and sub-divisional level to curb the menace of banned polythene bags. But the ban has become a farce all over the state in general and in the border areas in particular. The paper bags manufacturers have appealed to the state government to enforce ban on the use of polythene bags effectively in the state so that paper bags units could survive. |
Khajjiar lake is national wetland now
Chamba, December 22 The Animal Husbandry and Urban Development Minister Mr. Harsh Mahajan, said this while inaugurating a school building at Jansali today. He said that after its being identified as one of the national wetlands of the country; the Khajjiar lake would now get special attention of the Government of India with regard to its beautification and upkeep. Mr Mahajan said wetland experts of the Government of India would visit the Khajjiar Lake and draw up future strategies for its conservation and preservation so that funds could also be made available for its facelift, thereby, attracting more influx of tourists from across the country. “Declaring the Khajjiar Lake as a national wetland would give a much-needed fillip to thriving tourism industry of Khajjiar and Dalhousie which are known as the global wonderlands. It would also pave the way for revitalising the economy and livelihood of the local people engaged in the tourism business in this picturesque region,” Mr. Mahajan observed. Even earlier, a sum of Rs 8 crore had also been allocated by Mrs Ambika Soni, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, for the development activities of Chamba-Khajjiar tourism circuit to boost tourism industry, Mr Mahajan said. |
