Xmas festivity in schools

Ludhiana, December 21
Christmas was celebrated at St Xavier Playway School here today. Children came to school in colourful dresses and many of them were dressed as Santa Claus and fairies.

Various fun games were organised and children danced to Christmas songs.

Children danced and sang with Santa Claus who distributed sweets and gifts among them. A Christmas cake was also cut.

Ms S. Chopra, Principal, threw light on the importance of Christmas and the life of Jesus Christ.

Home & Heaven school

Home and Heaven Nursery School celebrated Christmas with joy. Children came dressed as Santa Claus and put up beautifully decorated Christmas trees. They cut cake and enjoyed the photo session.

Love Dale

Students of Love Dale celebrated Xmas by singing carols. They came dressed as Santa Claus and enjoyed a feast in school.

The girls came dresssed as fairies.

Teachers start indefinite strike

Ludhiana, December 21
Teachers of all private colleges in the city started their indefinite strike today in protest against the state government's "anti-teacher" policies. The teachers of about 28 colleges in the district went on strike, demanding the restoration of pension and gratuity benefits from the state government.

The agitating teachers alleged that they felt cheated because each time assurances were given by the government but nothing had been done so far.They said that in one of his statements, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had even announced that the government was sure of giving benefits to college teachers whereas it was not decided in aided-school teachers' case. "Because they have cheated us, we will continue with our struggle", said one of the agitating teachers at Khalsa College For Women (KCW) here.

Inter-house contest at KVM

An inter-house display board decoration contest was organised for students of the middle section of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, on “Fall winter a season of mists and ICE.”

Ms Neeraj Anand and Ms Shashi Laroiya were the judges

The results are: Tagore House 1, Nehru House 2, and Subhash House 3.

Ms Sonia Verma, in charge of the middle section, appreciated the efforts of teachers and the students.

Students honour workers

Workers of BCM, Dugri, had a pleasant surprise when they were invited by the students of the school for fun and games here today. They were given 'jadoo ki jhappi' by the students. They were seated and feted by students much to their delight. The programme started with saluting the work done by workers that made life easy all around. Genuine acknowledgement and sincere praises touched the deepest chords of workers' hearts. Students danced with them and made them play games prepared for them.

"Life-skills education is an integral part of CBSE curriculum and we have incorporated it in our school activities. We want the students to understand the dignity of labour and to build a society where money, caste, community, religion and other factors do not matter”, said Ms Vandana, Principal of the school. Students performed all chores, while workers enjoyed themselves. This reversal of roles brought tears to the eyes of workers.

GND university emerge north zone champs in hockey

Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, scored a convincing 6-1 victory over Punjabi University, Patiala, to emerge champions in the 44th North Zone Inter-Varsity Hockey Tournament, which concluded at the Prithipal Singh Astro Turf Stadium on the Punjab Agricultural Univeristy campus here today.

In the final Punjabi University lads failed to match their opponents, who excelled in every department of the game. Patiala varsity lads earned as many as seven penalty corners and except for one, all went in vain, while GND University forced one and made full use of it.

Varinder Kumar of GND University put his side ahead and four minutes later Bachhittar Singh increased the lead. Punjabi varsity’s Satinder Singh converted a penalty corner into a goal in the 39th minute to reduce the margin (2-1).

Varinder Kumar again found the target in the 40th minute to consolidate the lead 3-1. In the 49th minute Yadwinder Singh sounded the board to make it 4-1 while the next minute Bachhittar Singh scored again to make it 5-1. Nine minutes later, Bachhittar shot in one more goal to complete the tally 6-1.

Earlier, in the match to decide the third and fouth positions Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi, trounced Gurukul University, Hardwar, 5-1.

Dinesh Mustafa scored three goals while Sanjay Singh and Anish contributed one goal each for JMI University. Rajinder Singh was the lone scorer for the losers.

Workshop on career counselling

The Directorate of Social Empowerment and Economic Development of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC) organised a workshop at Guru Nanak Public School, Bassian, to provide career counselling to students.

Mr Iqbal Singh, Director, Social Empowerment and Economic Development Directorate, GGSSC, said the organisation was working to provide free guidance and information to students about the opportunities available to them after finishing their higher secondary. Generally due to lack of proper guidance and necessary information, they choose the traditional courses i.e. B A, B. Com etc., which is not a very good option.

Accentuating on the significance of the dignity of labour, he said nowadays, our youth was attracted towards white-collar jobs and planned their education accordingly.

Extempore competition

An inter-house extempore speech competition was organised for students of Classes IX to XII in Tagore Public School here today. The students had to think for five minutes and speak for two minutes on the given topic. All participants were at their best and spoke fluently highlighting their ideas. The Principal, Mrs Amrita Gakhar, appreciated the elocutionary skills of the students.

Results: Divva and Tanu 1, Niharika 2, Sahajmeet 3.

The students were thankful to their principal for organising a competition of such kind.

Quiz contest

Tagore Public School introduced the subject of Adolescence in a unique manner by holding an inter-house quiz competition of Classes VII, VIII and IX.

Excitement marked the athletics meet of kindergarten section of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, held here today. Tiny tots took part in various fun games. Competition for parents were also conducted.

Results: Relay race-Vansh and Amit 1, Ishan and Shelja 2, Parnika and Abhinav 3; flower race-Vaasu 1, Anubhav 2 and Rahul 3; obstacle race-Aditya Vir Singh 1, Abhinav Sharma 2 and Liza Goel 3; tied hands race-Damandpreet and Mudit 1, Pratham and Kabir 2, Adithi and Prabhleen 3.

Lemon on hand race-Tanvir Singh and Karanpreet 1, Smridhi 2 and Ayush 3; back race-Nandni Mehndiratta 1, Vanshika Bajaj 2 and Pulkit 3; caterpillar race-Raghvendera 1, Tushar 2 and Pratham 3; wind mill race-Raghav 1, Pavleen 2 and Lovleen 3; hands up race-Keshav 1, Shivam 2, Aryan 3.
