Reorientation programme for blood banks

As many as 86 licensed blood banks are fulfilling the blood requirement in the state of which 45 belongs to the government while the rest, 42, are managed by the non-government organisations.

Addressing a one-day reorientation programme organised for Medical Officers working in various blood banks by the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, Dr Daler Singh Multani from the society, said no blood bank could operate in the country without obtaining a mandatory license under the provisions of the Drug and Cosmetic Act 1940.

Under the National Blood Policy, blood is being tested for five diseases - HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Malaria and VDRL - before its transfusion. He also exhorted the medical officers to encourage people for donating blood voluntarily.

Dr R.R. Sharma, assistant professor from the Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGI, delivered a lecture on blood safety. Dr Avtar Singh, deputy director of the Blood Safety, welcomed dignitaries and asked the trainees to follow the basic standards and guidelines of blood transfusion.

Aadil’s ton leads Leicester to victory

A fine ton by skipper Aadil Ali (126) helped the City Cricket Academy of Leicester (UK) to beat the hosts MCM Blue Caps Cricket Academy by 25 runs in the second match of the JAL Friendship Series (u-13) being played at the MCM DAV College grounds, Sector 36, here today.

Aadil Ali, who elected to bat first, demolished the bowling attack of the MCM team. He hit 14 boundaries and two sixes. Dharmesh was the second highest scorer with 17 runs. The team set a target of 193 for the hosts in 35 overs.

Sechit and Pranav took two wickets each for 36 and 47 runs, respectively.

Chasing the target, the MCM team started on a good note with Angad Khera 22 (21) and Harsaroop 40 (55) scoring 44 runs in 6 overs. At one stage, the team was 126 for 1. However, a fine bowling spell by Kunal (4 for 16) and Priyesh (3 for 38) shattered all hopes and bundled out the team for 167 in 27.3 overs.

Pranav contributed 39 in 41 balls. Adil Ali was declared man of the match.

CCA - 192 for 8 in 35 overs (Aadil Ali 126, Dharmesh 17 n.o.; Sechit Madra 2 for 36, Pranav 2 for 47).

MCM - 167 all out in 27.3 overs (Harsaroop 40, Pranav 39, Angad 22; Kunal 4 for 16, Priyesh 3 for 38).

Umesh Gupta wins sub-junior snooker title

Panchkula, December 21
Umesh Gupta won the sub- junior Snooker Championship defeating the defending champion Ashish Aggarwal in Haryana State Sub-Junior, Junior, Senior Billiards and Snooker Championship at Haryana Billiards, Sector 11, here today.

Umesh hit a break of 31 in the first frame and won 72-27. In the next frame, Ashish was leading throughout the frame but gave away it to Umesh 67-62.

UT under-19 team selected

Following players have been selected for the Chandigarh Cricket the under 19 team, which will participate in the National School Games at Delhi from December 22 to 28.

4 selected for state team

Four players — Anju, Sunita, Kamaljit and Paramjit from Shaheed Kanshi Ram Physical College, Bhagomajra — have been selected
in the state volleyball team.

The players will represent Punjab in National Volleyball Championship to be held from December 27 to January 3 at Raipur (Uttar Pradesh).
