City student wins National Child Award
Ludhiana, November 16 Neharika is a student of plus one (medical stream) in DAV Public School here. Talking to Ludhiana Tribune , she said:" I returned totally refreshed and exhilarated by my experience yesterday. I was so touched by the simplicity and humility of men at high places and the Prime Minister was very gracious. I felt I was in heaven when I received the award." Neharika , a prodigy child of parents, Dr Hari Mohan Saxsena and Dr Madhu Saxsena, both scientists, is equally good at science and English poetry . She secured 97 per cent marks in science in the CBSE examination and wants to become an astronaut. She said: "I know I am good in poetry but I want to pursue my studies in medicine. Neharika is also the proud recipient of the International Poet of Merit Award which includes a plaque and a medal. The coveted award was given to her by the International Society of Poets at its convention and symposium held a few years ago in Washington , USA . She says: "My father was a diplomat in Russia at that time. I was invited to read my poem before a distinguished audience. I received a bronze medal. Her three poems have been published in anthologies brought out by the International Library of Poetry, USA. A nature photograph taken by her was also published in an anthology by the International Library of Photography , USA. Neharika has done well in academics also, having secured ninth rank in the sixth National Science Olympiad. She has already visited Star City near Moscow to see cosmonauts undergoing full training and full-scale models of space shuttle and the space station. She said philosophically: "I used to be an introvert but now I have become an extrovert and am ready to show my poems to my friends. I am a keen observer of people and their traits. I try to acquire the positive traits of people to improve my personality and hence, I am constantly evolving. " For a 15-year- old, it is quite a profound statement. |
Rural girls college building inaugurated
Amloh, November 17 The Child Development and Project Officer, Amloh, was critical of the present system of education, which had failed to bring about all-round development of the child. State chief of the Bhartiya Kisan Union Baldev Singh Miyan Pur appreciated the initiative of the college management to provide education to girls from remote rural areas. Many girls dropped out after matriculation as their parents did not want to send them to far-off places. College chairman Parminder Singh said the college was functioning for the past three years and had now shifted to its own building. Students presented a colourful programme on the occasion. Debate and essay competitions will be held here tomorrow on the college campus. The events will be adjudicated by judges from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and PTU colleges. The Department of Business Management and the Training and Placement Cell of Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology (LCET), Katani Kalan, organised a guest lecture on the college campus today. Dr S.K. Singla, Head, Department of Business Management, Punjab Agricultural University, was the resource person. The seminar was organised to apprise the students of various concepts of organisational research, quantitative techniques and project management. NSS volunteers of Devki Devi Jain Memorial College for Women visited Vocational Rehabilitation and Training Centre under the guidance of Principal Prem Gupta and NSS programme officers Seema Soni and Lotika Gupta here today. Renowned Odissi dancer Ranjna Gohar was the guest of honour. She was presented a bouquet by Ranjodh Singh, Dr Narinder Sandhu and Jasbir Punni. The function started with the lighting of a ceremonial lamp by the guest of honour. An inter-school youth festival was organised at Gurdwara Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, Sidhwan Kalan, by the Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Ludhiana zone, here today. Inter-school declamation contests, poetry recitation, slogan writing and various other competitions were held to involve youth in extracurricular activities along with their studies and shape up their overall personality, said study circle Director Dr Charan Kamal Singh in a press note today. In order to promote learning with fun and inculcate the spirit of competition among the students to help them improve their personality, an Inter-class quiz on foreign trade was organised for the students of vocational subject of foreign trade

The members of the Private College Non-teaching Employees Union, Punjab and Chandigarh, will hold a rally at Doaba college, Jalandhar, on November 18. The union at its executive body meeting yesterday took the decision to hold the rally in support of their demands for pension and gratuity, grant of 5 per cent interim relief, increase in medical allowance from 25 per cent to 35 per cent and the implementation of the ACP scheme under 4-9-14 years instead of 8-16-24-32 years. The Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology (LCET), Katani Kalan, organised a seminar on ‘Foundry Practises’ for minimising defects in auto-parts casting. Mr K.K. Shaw, programme director of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDI), was the resource person for the lecture. It was aimed to provide practical engineering experience to the mechanical engineering students of the LCET. Mr Shaw highlighted the problems faced by the casting industry and the possible solutions to improve the quality of the product to sustain global competition. He also discussed the problems faced by the industry regarding the manufacturing of automotive parts. He apprised the students and the faculty of the college about the situation in 300 foundries in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Phagwara region. The various issues concerning the choice of steel like hardness, determination, grading etc. were discussed for their appropriate selection for best results in casting. He appreciated the efforts of the college in providing the latest technical and laboratory facilities for the testing of foundry products. Dr K.D. Students of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Gujarkhan Campus, gave brilliant performances at the two-day zonal youth festival held at Baba Banda Singh Bahadar Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, recently. Twenty-eight colleges of the PTU participated in Zone IV, GNIMTians won 10 first and second positions. Avinash, Munish, Dinesh, Sanjeet. Hardeep and Anurag bagged the first prize in mime while Ramandeep Kaur won the first prize in classical vocal song (solo). Harpreet Singh and Baiwant Singh won the first prize in vaar singing. Their team won the second prize in both bhangra and giddha. Harpreet and Baiwant Singh also won the second prize in both western group song and western solo song. Ashu won the second prize in light vocal solo, Sanchit stood second in mimicry while Manjot Kaur won the second prize in poster making. Dr (Col) H.S. DBA meeting witnesses rowdy scenes
Ludhiana, November 17 The supporters of Bar President Naval Kishore Chhibber claimed that the miscreants did not even spare the President. Mr Chhibber and Secretary Rajneesh Gupta also exchanged hot words. The duo accused each other for creating a nuisance in the meeting. The meeting was called on the requisition moved by certain members of the Bar for queries about the proposed voters list displayed on the notice board. Mr Chhibber said,'' Sensing defeat in the coming annual elections of DBA, a contender for the post of President, Hemant Kalia, intentionally disrupted the peaceful meeting with the help of his supporters.'' Now the meeting would he held on November 20. On the other hand, Mr Kalia, former Bar President, issued a press note and claimed that he had raised the point in the meeting about the proposed voters list. He alleged that on the last day of paying subscription, the receipt books were not signed by the President of Bar despite repeated requests. The secretary of the bar had signed the last receipt bearing no: 1462. All the record was taken by Ms Kamal Jyoti, who displayed on the notice board few days later that total 14 receipt books were consumed and whereon one was consumed upto 62 and all were in her custody. Mr Kalia questioned that how the proposed voter list shows the number of proposed voters as 1533 instead of 1462. He alleged that even the list mentioned certain names, which were earlier deleted from the list for being non-practising lawyers. The Vice President of DBA, Ms Kamal Jyoti, refuted the allegations levelled by Mr Kalia. He said actually the lawyer Gaurav Kalia, son of Hemant Kalia, had snatched the receipt book from the Bar clerk. There was no hanky-panky in the proposed voters list. |
