Lakhs of rupees for Vikas Yatra, not a penny for this village

Lakhs of rupees of the public exchequer were spent on the Vikas Yatra of the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, but for farmers of Baniewal village a grant of Rs 5 lakh has not been released for a drain that floods their fields every monsoon leaving them with mounting debts.

Hero DMC Heart Institute (HDHI) organised a series of events to create awareness regarding diabetes among the public to mark World Diabetes Day here today. In a lecture on ill-effects of diabetes and the need to take preventive steps, Dr G.S. Wander, chief cardiologist and coordinator at the HDHI, said people with diabetes were more likely to get heart disease.

200 vehicles flagged off for rally

Mr Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, Parliamentary Secretary, Home, Justice and Sanik Welfare, today flagged off a fleet of more than 200 vehicles carrying Congress workers from the grain market, Amloh, for participation in the party rally at Ludhiana.

There probably could have been no better way to pay tributes to Pt Jwaharlal Nehru than what city-based educationist M.P. Mittal followed. An ardent admirer of Pandit Nehru, he has preserved “Nehru in Pictures”, a magazine portraying the life of the late Prime Minister, published way back in 1964. "My father gave me this magazine and since I liked the leader so much, I kept it with myself. It is the rarest collection of pictures of Pandit Nehru," claims Mr Mittal.

5 Executive Officers promoted 
Ahmedgarh, November 14
The Punjab Government has promoted five Executive Officers to the post of Assistant Commissioners at various corporations in the state. According to a Local Bodies Department statement, Mr Nazar Singh, EO, Khanna, has been promoted as Assistant Commissioner at the Municipal Corporation, Patiala.

Bid to break open ATM
Ludhiana, November 14
Some miscreants tried to commit a burglary at the State Bank of India ATM installed at Shastri Nagar here last night. Their attempt, however, failed as they could not break open the ATM machine and it remained unscathed. In sheer frustration, the burglars took away the aluminum knob of the glass door of the ATM room.

15 booked for assault
Jagraon, November 14
In three separate incidents, the Raikot and Jagraon police has booked 15 persons on the charge of assault. In the first incident, the Raikot police has registered a case under Sections 454, 427, 34 of the IPC against Darshan Singh, Kaka Singh and Amarjit Singh of Pherurain on charge of assault.

Extend date for filing VAT return: PTBA
Ludhiana, November 14
The Punjab Tax Bar Association (PTBA) has urged the state government to extend the date for filing the annual VAT return as well as the submission of C, H and F forms to March 31, 2007, in place of November 20, 2006. The association has also made certain suggestions for the purpose of general improvement in the working system of the Excise and Taxation Department, as also some amendments to the VAT Act and Rules made thereunder.

Prudential ICICI AMC launches new scheme

The Prudential ICICI Asset Management Company (AMC) yesterday announced the launch of the Prudential ICICI Equity and Derivatives Fund. It is an open-ended equity scheme, which aims to generate low-volatility returns by investing in a mix of cash equities, equity derivatives and debt markets. The fund aims to provide better returns than typical debt instruments and lower volatility in comparison to equity.

PNB disburses Rs 110 cr loans
Ludhiana, November 14
Punjab National Bank has disbursed retail loans to the tune of Rs 110 crore in Ludhiana in the current year so far. It has registered a growth of 100 per cent under retail segment in comparison to the corresponding period last year.

Alcohol intake affects liver depending on the dose and duration of use. Ninety to 100 per cent of heavy drinkers develop fatty liver, 10-35 per cent suffer from Alcoholic Steato-Hepatitis (ASH) while 10 are afflicted from cirrhosis.

Vice-president of LDCA bereaved
Ludhiana, November 14
Kishori Lal, father of Mr Neelam Kanish, vice-president of the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA), died following a cardiac arrest here last evening. He was 75. Mr Kishori Lal is survived by his wife, one daughter and five sons. His funeral took place at the Civil Lines cremation ground here today. A large number of people besides leaders of political parties and representatives of various sports organisations were present .
