Liquor smuggler arrested
: The Majitha police has arrested Raj Kumar, a resident of Tehsilpura, for his alleged involvement in the smuggling of liquor, and seized 384 bottles meant for sale in Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh.
Mr Gautam Cheema, SSP, said here on Wednesday that the special cell arrested the accused near Gehri Mandi, Jandiala. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.

Cheque for Sepoy’s family
: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Bhagwant Singh, on Wednesday, handed over a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Ms Davinder Kaur, widow of Sepoy Jagjit Singh, as ex-gratia granted by the Sikh Regimental Centre from the Army Central Welfare Fund. The DC said the state government had embarked upon several measures for the welfare of ex-servicemen.

Cops hurt in mishap
: As many as five police personnel, including four Home Guard jawans, were injured when a Tata-407 mini truck (PB-07J-9766) in which they were returning to Hoshiarpur from Nangal after performing duty at the Chief Minister’s road show, overturned near Polka village, about 30 km from here, on Wednesday.

Two women thieves held
: The Sadar police has nabbed a two-member gang of women thieves for allegedly stealing from clothing shops and selling fabric in the market. The driver of their car managed to escape. He has been identified as Titu. As many as 20 suits were recovered from the possession of the two women, Harjinder Kaur and Nirmal Kaur, both of Amritsar.

BHIWANI
One-year jail for driver
:The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr JB Gupta, has sentenced a Haryana Roadways driver to 1 years’ imprisonment and fined him Rs 800 after holding him guilty of causing a road accident. Gobind of Bhangarh village had lodged a report with the police that Raj Kumar of Bhangarh was travelling on his scooter when a fast approaching Haryana Roadways bus crushed him to death near Dohki village. The driver was identified as Ishwar of Kadma village.

Housing grants cleared: As many as 24 cases were cleared under the housing grants scheme at a meeting of the district advisory committee of the Welfare Department on Wednesday. The DC, Mr Mohinder Kumar, presided over the meeting.
