Rotary Club holds blood donation camp

Panchkula, November 4
The Rotary Club today organised a blood donation camp at Bhavan Vidyalaya to help meet the shortfall of blood caused by the spread of dengue fever and also shortage of blood faced by the General Hospital, Sector 6. As many as 65 units of blood were collected at the camp.

The blood donation camp was inaugurated by Mr BN Rampal, Secretary, Bhawan Vidyalaya. He appreciated the efforts of Rotarians of Panchkula and the Bhavan Vidyalaya administration for making this emergency blood donation camp a success.

Earlier, the chief guest was received by Mr Parveen Goel, Mr Ajay Chhabra, Mr Naval Manglani, Ram, Rtn Pardeep Aggarwal and other senior rotarians and members of the school administration.

The volunteers of Interact Club of the school (youth wing of Rotary Club, Panchkula) lent a helping hand to the medical staff in their work and they also willingly served refreshment to the donors. Donors donated blood for the noble cause.

Wg Cdr Rtn Pradeep Prabhakar, president Rotary Club, Panchkula, appreciated the efforts of donors for serving the society and also helping the General Hospital, Panchkula in meeting the urgent requirement of blood.

Stress the biggest killer: expert

“Mental tension is the biggest killer in the modern times because about 70 per cent of the disease originate in human mind. As such there is a need to learn techniques to cool down one’s mind even in odd circumstances,” said Dr Girish Patel, a renowned psychiatrist of Mumbai who is also the secretary of the medical wing of he Rajyoga Education and Research Foundation here today.

Dr Patel, who addressed a gathering of doctors at Sukh Shanti Bhavan in Phase VII, said about 70 per cent of the disease such as headache, high blood pressure, coronary artery diseases, asthma, diabetes, acidity etc were the result of a fast life, work pressure and other tensions of modern age.

He explained that development of mind power could change more than 800 chemicals in the brain in turn could practically affect all the psychological systems and could promote healing process.

He further said stress causing events were life-embracing for all where as meditation made us able to stop brooding over stressful events and re-channel mental energies into positive directions.

Dr Patel also addressed officers of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research on working efficiency and productivity. He advised them not to think too much about efficiency but to maintain a spirit of enthusiasm which automatically would enhance productivity.

Dr Patel, who has authored nine books on health, gave a talk on strategies of success of the managers of Punjab Tractors Limited and members of the National Institute of Personnel Management.

Workers needed for 24-hour helpline

The Psychiatry Department of the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, has sought workers for its 24-hour helpline “Asha” that has been operating for the last two years.

Dr B.S. Chavan, HoD, said those who were interested to work should be of clinical psychology and counseling background. The interested candidates may contact M/S Good House Keeping, Block-A, ground floor of the hospital building.

Dr Chavan claimed that the department had been providing guidance and counseling to public on various psychological problems like stress, anxiety, depression, inter-personal conflicts, sexual problems drug abuse and many others. He added that timely guidance and intervention increased the likelihood of better prognosis and treatment. Because of ignorance or stigma people do not seek treatment which often lead to suicides, opined Dr Chavan.

St Stephen’s kick out DAV academy 4-0

The St Stephen’s Football Academy-45 registered an emphatic four-goal win against the DAV Football Academy on the second day of 4th Kanwar Lal Memorial Football Tournament held at the Football Ground, Sector 17, here today.

The first goal was scored in the 10th minute by Palmie. After that, two goals were scored by Joney Chand in the 16th and the 33rd minute.

At the half-time, the score read 3-0. After break, Kuldeep scored another goal leading his team to win the match 4-0. Joney Chand was declared ‘Man of the Match’.

The second match was won by the Chandigarh Football Academy with a massive score of 5-0 against the Mehar Football Academy, Kurali. The CFA boys combined well and made continuous attacks. They got the first breakthrough in the 30th minute through Narinder.

This was followed by another goal on a rebound by Gurpreet 10 minutes later.

The players of Mehar Academy lost couple of good chances to reduce the margin and the poor performance of the forwards was the main reason for their poor finish.

Meanwhile, Kuljeet Singh of the Mehar Academy was shown yellow card by the referee for rough play during the 50th minute. The third goal was scored in the 60th minute by Jaspal (CFA) with his solo efforts.

Manoj (CFA) sealed the fate of the visitors by scoring the fourth goal in the 63rd minute.

Six minutes later, the defender, Jaswinder Singh, of the Mehar Academy obstructed Ravinder of the CFA and the referee awarded the penalty stroke where he made no mistake in converting the same. Gagan of CFA was declared the ‘Man of the Match’.

Raman overall best athlete

Abhimanyu Parmar emerged winner in 100 m race and obstacle race event and got the best athlete title (2nd year group) during the 60th Annual Athletics Meet of Punjab Engineering College which concluded here today.

Raman went home with the overall best athlete award in the boys’ section while Shivani bagged the same tag among girls. Prof K.K. Talwar, PGI Director, presided and distributed prizes to the winners.

The results are: 100 m: 1 Abhimanyu Parmar, 2 Varun Jain, 3 Jorawar; 50 m: 1 Shivani, 2 Pooja, 3 Divya Kesari; obstacle race: 1 Abhimanu Parmar, 2 Sumit Verma, 3 Nitin Shyam; best cyclist: Vaibhav; best athlete (boys): Raman; 2nd best athlete (boys): Mohit Bharti; best athlete (girls): Shivani; 2nd best athlete (girls): Shweta; best athlete (4th year): Rohit Sahota; best athlete (3rd year): Raman ; best athlete (2nd year): Abhimanyu Parmar; and best athlete (1st year): Varun Jain.

DAV school win CBSE tennis tournament

DAV Model School, Sector 15-A, Chandigarh, won the CBSE North Zone-1 Tennis Tournament (U-19) organised by CRPF Public School, Delhi, recently.

In the final, the DAV team defeated Springdales School, Delhi, 2-0. In the girls' final, Parul Verma beat Kritya 2-0 (6-0, 6-2) and in the boys' group, too, Gurmohit Singh defeated Gaurav by an identical margin in sets 2-0 (6-4, 6-3).

Meanwhile, Akanksha Arora bagged gold medal in the 10 m air pistol in the junior category of the 10th All-India Kumar Surender Singh Inter-School Shooting Championship held at Ahmedabad from October 27 to 31.

Amrita wins boxing c’ship opener

Amrita of SD College-32 beat Ritika of Government Home Science College, Sector 10, in 48 kg category through the referee stopped the contest (RSC) verdict on the opening day of the Chandigarh State Senior Women Boxing Championship held at the Sector 42 complex here today.

The other results:

46 kg: Pandit Shikha b Shilpa, Sunidhi b Komal; 50 kg: Parveen b Anjali, Jyothi b Amisha; 52 kg: Suman b Neha, Raveena b Kanika; 54 kg: Anshu b Monika and Arpna b Payal; 60 kg: Tejwant b Neeraj and Anjali b Priyaneet.

However, in the Sub-Junior Boys’ Boxing State Championship held at the same venue, Rohit of Eagle Club thrashed Vishal of GMS-46 in the semifinal bout in the 38 kg category.

Puneet wins u-14 table tennis title

Puneet of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, won the sub-junior boys title (u-14), defeating Ranjot Singh of AKSIPS, Sector 41, in four straight sets (11-6, 11-8, 11-9 and 11-7) in the ongoing Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship held at the table tennis hall, Sector 23, here today.

Sub-junior girls (u-14) title was won by Naina of DAV Public School, Sector 8, defeating Kalyani of Manav Mangal School, Sector 21 (11-6, 11-8, 11-7 and 11-8).

In the junior boys event (u-17) Dev Saini of DAV Public School and Puneet of DPS, Sector 40, have qualified for the finals. In junior girls Nadia Saini and Meghna have qualified for the finals.

Navdeep, Aakriti register win in triathlon championship

Navdeep Singh and Aakriti secured first place in the Sub-junior girls and boys category, respectively, and won Rs 1000/- as prize money in the Chandigarh State Triathlon Championship for seniors, juniors and sub-juniors categories held at the Panjab University swimming pool here, today. As many as 50 participants took part

According to S Marrya, honorary secretary, Chandigarh State Triathlon Association, the selected junior and sub junior triathletes will represent the city in the national championship to be held in Bhopal from November 18 to 19.

The results:

Senior (Men): 1 Nikku, 2 Harmeet and 3 Vinod Rana.

Junior (boys): 1 Kanwarpreet Singh, 2 Jaideep Singh and 3 Vivek Yadav. Sub-junior (boys): 1 Navdeep Singh, 2 Jagwinder Singh and 3 Amandeep Singh Sub- junior (girls): 1 Aakriti and 2 Isha.

Help centre at IT office for e-filing of returns

E-filing of income tax returns by corporate assessees is now mandatory. To help and guide the assessees in e-filing of the returns, the Income Tax Department has a set up a help centre at the income tax office, Sector 17-D, here.

Inaugurating the help centre today, Mrs S.K. Aulakh, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, north-west region, Chandigarh, briefed members of the Chamber of Commerce and Tax Bar Association about the functioning of the help desk. She informed that other help centres in north west region had become functional from today at Amritsar, Ludhiana, Panchkula, Jalandhar, Patiala and Rohtak.

Such initiatives were being taken by the Central Board of Direct Taxes to help the corporate tax payers in e-filing of their returns.

Mrs Aulakh informed that the last date of filing of returns by companies for the assessment year 2006-07 had been extended to November 30, 2006. It was also informed that the website provided assistance in e-filing of returns had been set up by the department at incometaxindiaefiling.gov.i.

The Chief Commissioner of Income Tax also advised the corporate tax payers to file their returns of income at the earliest so as to avoid last minute problems.

IT help centre for corporates opens

Ms Manju Lakhanpal, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Haryana Region, inaugurated the help centre to facilitate e-filing of the income tax (IT) returns by the companies.

A live demonstration of the process of e-filling was given by Mr Raman Chopra, Joint Commissioner, Income Tax.

This help centre has been set up in the Aayakar Bhavan, Sector 2. The centre started functioning from today and will be operational till November 30, including holidays.

The centre would be equipped with a broadband Internet connection and computers and would disseminate information about the procedure and render help in the filing of e-returns by the companies, a spokesperson said.

The inauguration was attended by the members of Local Chamber of Commerce and Tax Bar Association, who were briefed about e-filing procedure and the help available in the Panchkula.

Licence must for security agencies

Private security agencies in the city have been asked to apply for a licence with the Administration till March 15, 2007, an official press note said here yesterday.

The Administration has framed rules called the “Chandigarh Administration Private Security Agencies Rules, 2006” which will be effective immediately. All private security agencies at present working here are required to apply for licences.

In order to bring the various private detective agencies under a regulatory mechanism, Parliament has passed an Act called as “Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005. Under this Act, it has been provided that no person will carry on or commence the business of private security agency unless he holds a licence issued by the prescribed authority under the Act.
