Govt urged to save cotton farmers from exploitation
Ludhiana, October 18 Prof Manjit Singh Kadian, acting chief of the outfit, said the government should immediately direct the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and Markfed to immediately step in and save the farmers from exploitation at the hands of private buyers. “We have asked our local units to give memorandums to their respective MLAs,” he added. He said the CCI was purchasing cotton in neighbouring Rajasthan at the rate of Rs 2,000-2,200 per quintal but the rate for the same quality of the crop in Punjab was between Rs 1,800-1,900 per quintal in the absence of government agencies. He alleged that private buyers were not giving a good price to farmers for their crop and there were reports that cotton growers had sold their crop at much lower rates. Commission agents and traders were spreading rumours that since no government agency was in the field, farmers had no option but to accept the prices they were being offered, he alleged. While blaming the Congress government for the large-scale looting of farmers, the kisan leader said not only were the farmers being looted, the state exchequer was also losing crores of rupees on account of the large-scale theft of the market fees. The traders were not disclosing the quantum of their purchases to the respective market committees, he said. He said their workers would hold “jan sampark” programmes from October 19 to November 9. |

Consumer Forum penalises litigant for hiding facts
Ludhiana, October 18 Taking a strong note, the President of the Forum, Mr A.S. Narula, Members Daljit Singh Bakshi and Pooja Dewan dismissed the complaint filed by Ms Veena Sharma, resident of Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana, with costs of Rs 2,000. The complainant had filed a case against the Sutlej Co-operative House Building Society, Ludhiana. It was claimed by the complainant that Ms Asha Sood was allotted a plot of 500 sq yards in Friends Colony, Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana, by the Sutlej Co-operative Society. Later on, the complainant purchased the same plot from Asha Sood and it was transferred in her name in June 1990. Full cost of the plot was paid, including development charges, to the tune of Rs 17,500. But she was not given the possession of the plot despite repeated requests. She approached the society several times but she was told that the allotment of the plot had been cancelled without giving any reason to her. It was also asserted that earlier she had filed a civil suit for temporary injunction but the same was returned as the civil court had no jurisdiction to entertain the society related cases. On the other hand, the counsel for the society denied the allegation levelled by the complainant. It was pleaded that the suit of the complainant was dismissed by the civil court with directions to approach the Registrar of the societies. The allotment of the plot was cancelled by the society vide its resolution, dated March 29, 1994, on account of the non-payment of all the dues. Before cancellation of the plot, a public notice was also given in the daily newspaper. Even a registered notice was also sent to the complainant. After the cancellation of the plot, the same was allotted to another member, who was in the waiting list. Importantly, the consumer forum observed that in the civil suit, it was alleged that she was having the possession of the plot and the society was threatning to disposses her forcibily. Whereas, in the present case, the complainant had prayed for directing the society to give her the possession of the plot. The consumer forum also observed that the plot was purchased in 1990 but she remained silent for all these 15 years. The complaint before the forum was filed in July 2005. Even the civil suit filed by her was dismissed on October 8, 1999. |
