Physiotherapy centre opens

Chandigarh, October 15
The Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association today opened a physiotherapy centre at the Sector 35-B gurdwara. The centre, fitted with latest physiotherapy equipment worth Rs 1.5 lakh will provide free treatment to senior citizens, disabled and destitutes of the city.

This is the third in the series of free physiotherapy centres started in the city by the association, which is already running similar facilities at Arya Samaj temples of Sectors 7 and 16 and Makhan Shah Lobana Bhavan in Sector 30.

Speaking to TNS about the new facility, Mr D.S. Grewal, a Sector 35 resident, said, “The idea is to reach out to as many people as possible. The facility will cater to patients with joint pains, frozen shoulders, finger rigidity and other problems. It will also treat physical challenged people. We have the equipment required for treatment of all these ailments and we also have a trained and qualified physiotherapist.”

The Centre will provide services to all others at a nominal charge of Rs 15 per sitting. Anyone from anywhere can access treatment at the new centre. Mr P.H. Vaishnav, president of the association, said, “This is our way of helping the downtrodden and others who cannot access the said facility elsewhere. We are already working to improve the lot of old and poor destitutes who learn various trades at our destitute homes at Mauli Jagran and Sector 25.”

The association is also planning to start a day-care centre for senior citizens according to Mr Grewal.

The new physiotherapy centre will run from 4 to 7 p.m. on all days, except Sundays.

700 examined at health camp

Chandigarh, October 15
More than 700 patients were examined and provided medicines free of cost at a health check-up-cum-awareness camp organised by the UT Red Cross Society in collaboration with the UT Health Department in Colony No. 5 here today.

The society put up an exhibition highlighting its activities on cancer, HIV-AIDS and first aid. A magic show and a documentary film, aimed at creating awareness on HIV-AIDS, were also held.

Ms Jean Rodrigues, wife of the Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT, inaugurated the camp. The Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman, Red Cross Society, Chandigarh, Mr R.K. Rao, and the SDM (E)-cum-Secretary, Red Cross Society, and Ms Swati Sharma apprised the chief guest of measures to create awareness on AIDS.

Kunal shines in cricket tournament opener

Chandigarh, October 15
Kunal Mahajan made an unbeaten 102 not out on the opening day of the 9 th Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament being held at St John's High School, Sector 26, here today.

St John's High School beat DAV Public School, Sector 8, by 163 runs.

St John's team piled up 229 runs in the stipulated 25 overs. Kunal was ably supported by Vishal Jhatta (42) and Veer Karan Goyal (22 not out). In reply DAV School was bundled out for a paltry 66 runs .

Brief scores :

St John's: 229 for 4 in 25 overs.

DAV School 66 all out in 23.2 overs (Amish 15, Shashya 14, Ankit 3 for 3, Veer Karan Goyal 2 for 7, Anurag 2 for 12, Vikram Talwar 1 for 9).

In the second match Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, beat Hansraj Public School by five wickets.

SJOBA holds golf tourney

I.P.S. Mann emerged the best player of the tournament (gross) in the Annual Golf Competition organised by St John’s Old Boys Association (SJOBA) at the Chandigarh Golf Club. In all, 42 members participated in the competition. Arjan Veer Singh Chadha was declared the best player in the nett section.

This was the first sports event organised by SJOBA after Director (Public Relations) Vivek Atray became president of the association.

The teeoff was done by international golfer Harmeet Kahlon. Attractive Prizes were given to the participants.

Results: best player of tournament (gross): I.P.S. Mann; best player (nett): Arjan Veer Singh Chadha; best player (category 0-8 handicap): Tarun Lehal, Anupinder Grewal; best player (category 9-15 handicap): Jaidev Singh, Sandeep Singh Chadha; best player (category 16-24 handicap): Ashu Punchhi, Ratandeep Swani.

DAV-15 overall champions in zonal meet

DAV Model School, Sector 15, Chandigarh, bagged the overall championship title in the boys group, while in the girls’ category, OS DAV Public School, Kaithal, went away with the title in the All-India Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Zonal Tournament that concluded at the Sector 7 sports complex here today.

Manjit Nain of CL DAV Public School, Sector 11, Panchkula, was adjudged the “best athlete” among girls, whereas among the boys, the title was shared by Avinash Mishra of DAV Model School, Sector 15, Chandigarh, and Bhupinder Singh of DAV Centenary Public School, Shahbad.
