Elders Day celebrated

Panchkula, October 15
The Retired Persons’ Welfare Association, Panchkula, today celebrated International Elders Day on the premises of the CL DAV Senior Public School, Sector 11, here today. Ms Manveer Kaur Gill, President, Municipal Council, was the chief guest while Mr Vikas Chaudhary, councillor, Sector 11, presided over the function. Mrs Anjali Marriya, Principal of the school, was the guest of honour.

In his address, Mr R.K. Chaudhary, general secretary of the association, highlighted the spirit of celebrations of the Day and explained the aims and objectives of the association. He listed out the donations made by the association towards earthquake victims of Jammu and Kashmir, to the PGI, Chandigarh, and the Senior Citizens Council, Panchkula.

He also put forth the difficulties and problems of elderly persons and the association, especially office accommodation, post office, library among others. He presented a memorandum to Ms Gill, who assured the association of immediate action in all matters. Ms Manveer Kaur gill donated Rs 11,000 and Mr Vikas Chaudhary gave Rs 5,100 to the association.

All dignitaries were honoured by the association. Ms Gill gave away prizes to school students.

Three senior citizens and three oldest members of the association were honoured by Mr Vikas Chaudhary by presenting mementos. Mr J.N. Bhatti, vice-president, presented the vote of thanks.

Srijan-2006

Banur, October 15
The Chitkara Educational Trust today organised a fresher’s party “Srijan-2006” to welcome new students on its campus at Jhansla, near here.

The proceedings started with Saraswati vandana and lamp-lighting ceremony, which was presided over by Dr Madhu Chitkara, director of the Chitkara Educational Trust. The students presented a mix of classical and western fusion dances. Students also participated in skit, monologue, modelling and dances, besides singing.

Manveen and Anirudh were crowned Ms and Mr Chitkara, respectively. Later, over 1,200 students participated in the dance bash. TNS

Court notice to CHB

Chandigarh, October 15
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr B.K. Mehta, has directed the Chairman of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) or any other responsible officer of the board to appear before the court tomorrow.

The orders have been issued in connection with a case filed by Ms Meghna Dubey against the Administration. The CHB has been summoned to appear on behalf of the petitioner.

The court has sought details of 135 acres of land allotted to the CHB by the administration in the Rajiv Gandhi Chandigarh Technology Park, which was later allotted to Parsvnath Developers. — TNS

Hans’ novel discussed at seminar

Zirakpur, October 15
A discussion on “Kare Hathee”, a novel written by late journalist Sohan Singh Hans was the highlight of a seminar organised by the Sohan Singh Hans Yadgari Punjab Sahit Sabha here today.

Terming Hans an established novelist, Prof Narinderpal Singh from Yamunanagar, said the late journalist never compromised on his principles and stood for values of humanism and universal brotherhood.

Mr Ranjit Rahi, senior sub-editor of Punjabi Tribune, said Hans performed the roles of a journalist and novelist with elan. The president of “Puadi Satth”, Mr Manmohan Singh Daon, regretted that the acclaimed novel had not got the recognition it deserved.

Mr Bhupinder Singh from Sriganganagar, who was a special invitee, demanded that Zirakpur chowk should be named after the late journalist.

Prominent among those who spoke were Mr Narinder Sharma, president of the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat, Mr Balwinder Singh and Mr Kuljit Dyalpuri, president and general secretary of the sabha, respectively. TNS
