S. African delegation visits PAU

Ludhiana, October 12
A seven-member delegation led by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Venda, Thohoyandou, South Africa, Prof Ramogale, today met PAU Vice-Chancellor K.S. Aulakh to explore the possibility of an exchange programme between scientists and students of the two universities.

Dr Aulakh spoke on the status of agriculture after Independence. Referring to the role of Punjab in meeting the food deficit, he said the PAU made a wide difference to the agricultural scene in 1962.

Food production in the state logged a quantum jump from two million tonnes in 1960s to over 25 million tonnes at present.

He said the PAU would train scientists and impart education to South African students. “This will be possible within the ambit of the MoU signed at the government level between Limpopo and Punjab.

The Vice-Chancellor presented a set of university publications to Prof Ramogale.

Each delegate gave a small introduction and identified the areas in which they were seeking academic cooperation from the PAU.

The delegation visited some departments and evinced interest in farm power and machinery at the College of Agricultural Engineering.

The delegation also met the Dean, College of Agriculture, Dr G.S. Chahal, besides other Deans and the Director of Extension Education.

School board holds contests

Ludhiana, October 12
A regional-level competition of bhangra, vaar-gyan and “kavishree” was organised by the Punjab State Education Board at Smt Satyawati Oswal Vidya Mandir School here today. More than 40 schools from five districts are participating in the two-day event.

Principal Rakesh Kumari laid stress on the importance of such competitions in the overall development of students.

Several officials of the board from Mohali were present.

The results are—vaar-gyan: Baba Farid Public Senior Secondary School, Bathinda, 1; Senior Secondary Model School, Patiala, 2; and Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, 3.

Kavishree: Guru Gobind Singh Public High School, Sangrur, 1; and Government Senior Secondary School, Nabha, 2; and Shaheed-e-Azam Sukhdev Thapar Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, 3.

Bhangra:Government Elementary School, Badhowal, Ludhiana, 1; Robbin Model School High School, Sangrur, 2; and Modern Secular Public School, Dhuri, 3.

14 colleges to take part in fest

Doraha, October 12
More than 1,000 students of 14 colleges will participate in Youth and Heritage Festival of Ludhiana Zone-A, to be held at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, from October 14.

Some of the colleges which will participate are: A S College, Khanna, Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, Malwa College, Bondli-Samrala, Ludhiana, Gobindgarh Public College, Alour, Khanna, Government College, Karamsar Rara Sahib, BSSG Government College, Sidhsar, GGN Khalsa College, Ludhiana, and Arya College, Ludhiana. — OC

Govt School Rampur wins district science congress

Doraha, October 12
Government High School, Rampur, has once again secured the first position in the district-level competitions of science congress, 2006, organised at R.S Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, today.

Ms Gurdeep Kaur, Headmistress of the school, congratulated the participants, including Harmit Singh, Balraj Singh, Amanpreet Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Satnam Singh, along with their guide Ms Paul Rani Kaur, whose dedicated efforts had borne fruit and brought laurels to the school by facing tough competition from the public schools of Ludhiana and winning the first position.— OC

Ludhiana, October 12
The Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council (PRSPC) has selected three sportspersons for Amarjit Grewal Khel Ratan Award-2006. The award presentation function will be organised at Guru Nanak Bhavan here on October 28.

This was stated by Mr Ramesh Singla and Mr Prithipal Singh Batala, Chairman and President, respectively, of the PRSPC here today. They said the committee had finalised the names of former national hockey coach Baldev Singh and Olympians Palwinder Cheema (wrestler) and Rajwinder Kaur (athlete) for the award.

They said the council would also honour a sports club for the promotion of games on the occasion. The award would be given to the Football Academy of Rurka Kalan.

The three sportspersons would be given a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each while the academy would receive a cash prize of Rs 25,000.

A seminar would also be conducted during the prize distribution function to guide rural sports clubs. Prominent sports personalities would deliver lectures.

Basketball tourney gets under way

BCM Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, defeated Bharatiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School 39-14 in the boys u-16 section on the opening day of the Ludhiana District Basketball Championship, which began at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

In other matches Harkishan Public School, Doraha, outnumbered Kundan Vidya Mandir School 39-33; SGH Public Schhol, Doraha, pipped Gureh village 49-25; Green Land School, Ludhiana, outplayed Arya Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana 29-16.

In the girls u-16 group Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, beat BCM School, Ludhiana, 36-20. In the boys u-19 section Kundan Vidya Mandir school scraped past Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School 25-24.

In the men’s section, GNE College, Ludhiana, outclassed Air Force School, Halwara, 46-28.
