275 examined at homoeopathic camp

Chandigarh, October 12
More than 275 patients, suffering from various diseases, were examined at a homoeopathic medical camp, which was organised by the Don Bosco Navjeevan Society in collaboration with Dr Castro’s Charitable Homoeopathic Research Society, Chandigarh, at Bapu Dham Colony, here today.

A team of homoeopaths examined the patients. They were given medicines free of cost. The visitors were educated on symptoms of dengue and measures to prevent the disease.

Mr Rajan Kashyap, Chief Information Commissioner, Punjab, inaugurated the camp. He asked the NGOs to come forward to help the poor. He lauded the role of Dr Castro, managing director of the society, and Mr S.D. Kalia, programme organiser, for promoting homoeopathic system of medicine and social service in and around the city by holding such camps.

Dr Castro claimed that such camps would be organised in 15 slum colonies where people would be immunised against water-borne and vector-borne diseases.

Diabetes can cause blindness, say experts

Once diagnosed diabetic, patients may suffer blindness due to diabetic retinopathy in nearly 90 per cent cases within a period of 10 to 15 years. The disease has been affecting every section of society rapidly due to the changing lifestyle, listing the country on top of a list of 10 countries with the highest number of diabetic patients.

Ophthalmologists have been finding it hard to cope with the number of patients suffering from the disease every year. Currently, over 31 million diabetics have been registered with various hospitals in the country. Being a disorder of glucose metabolism, diabetes damages end organs, primarily eyes, nerves and kidneys. The disease affects the eye in such a way that patients are not aware of the symptoms till it attains an advanced stage.

Dr Amod Gupta, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at the PGI, said the vision of patients suffer from diabetic retinopathy could be stabilised but not improved. He was speaking to mediapersons during the seventh World Sight Day celebrations at the PGI here today.

Retina specialists — Dr Amod Gupta, Dr M.R. Dogra, Dr Vishali Gupta and Dr Ramandeep Singh — emphasised the need for multimodel intervention in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of World Sight Day, a book, “Diabetic Retinopathy — Atlas and Text”, authored by Dr Vishali Gupta, Dr Amod Gupta, Dr M.R. Dogra and Dr Ramandeep Singh, was released by Prof B.K. Sharma, a former Director of the PGI.

Workshop on public health

More than 30 participants from the Education Department, NGOs, health workers, Red Cross officers and volunteers attended a workshop on “public health in emergency and Red Cross response” organised by the Punjab branch of the Indian Red Cross Society at its regional centre here.

A press note issued by the branch, said the aim of the workshop was to educate the participants about actions to be taken in case of disasters as regards public health.

Prominent among those who participated in the workshop were Mr Amit Sharma and Mr Rajiv Sadana from the International Federation of Red Cross and the Red Crescent Society, Dr Sandeep from Patiala, Dr V.K. Puri and Mr Ramesh Aggarwal from the Punjab branch.

15 more test positive for dengue

Chandigarh, October 12
Fifteen new cases were today tested positive for dengue at the PGI and the GMCH, Sector 32.

During the past 24 hours, 33 new suspected cases were reported in the PGI of which 10 tested positive. While 16 new cases were reported from Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, the remaining were from neighbouring states. — TNS

Stage set for hockey semifinals

The team of DAV School lost to the 3 BRD team 0-5 on the second day of the Chandigarh State Hockey Championship (Seniors) 2006 at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today.

In the 38th minute, Rawat of 3 BRD charged the match through his field goal. After two minutes, he extended the lead 2-0.

Displaying a perfect coordination, the BRD team struck again through Pardeep in the 43rd minute. Playing without zeal, DAV conceded two more goals in the 48th and 59th minutes to lose the match 0-5.

In another match, which was played between Wanderers Club and CISF, the latter defeated the former 4-0.

Harish Sharma played the key role in the CISF win by netting three goals in the 12th, 26th and 48th minutes, respectively.

But, it was the first goal by Cyril Ekka in the third minute, which helped the team to dominate throughout the match.

In tomorrow’s semifinals, Chandigarh Hockey Academy will face CISF while Rock Rovers will take on 3 BRD at the same venue.

St Stephen’s set final clash with YPS

St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, sailed into the finals of the ICSC (Chandigarh Region) Inter-School Cricket Tournament after thrashing Carmel Convent School, Nahan, by 107 runs on the St Stephen’s School grounds at Togan here.

With the 64-run innings by Lakhan Shandil, St Stephen’s-45 scored 169 for 3 in 20 overs. Anurag Singh made a significant contribution of 48 runs.

In reply, Carmel Convent were dismissed for 62 runs in 16.3 overs. Ritwik, who made 18, was the highest scorer for Carmel Convent. Harmanpreet Singh (3 for 17), Akshay Sharma (3 for 14) and Vishal Gupta (2 for 6) were their main wicket-takers. St Stephen’s will meet Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, in the final tomorrow.

DAV-15 dominate zonal tournament

The hosts, DAV School, Sector 15, remained dominant with bagging titles in football, kabaddi and cricket (boys) in the ongoing All-India Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Zonal Tournament 2006-07 (Chandigarh/ Panchkula Zone) on the premises of the school here today.

In football, the DAV-15 team defeated DAV Public School, Pundri, (2-1) while in kabaddi and cricket, the school teams trounced DAV School, HUDA, Panipat, 65-32 and Hansraj Public School, Panchkula, respectively.

In the five-day meet, various DAV schools are competing in sports events, including basket ball, volley ball, hand ball, kho-kho, kabaddi, hockey, football, athletics, gymnastics and table tennis.

“The tournament is part of DAV culture and is annually conducted and hosted by various DAV institutions”, said Ms Rakesh Sachdeva, Principal of DAV School, Sector 15.
