Students display emotions with maturity
Chandigarh, October 12 Though the philosophical content of the script, an adaptation of Charles Dickens story of the same title, written by Inderjit Grewal, was obviously beyond the conceptual grasp of the fifth standard students, the directorial elegance of Zubin Mehta and overall contribution of staff and students of the school made the difference. Over 100 child prodigies participated in the musical play to bring alive the transformation of the protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge from a cruel miser to a benevolent philanthropist. The short play opens up with an ambience of celebrations of Christmas, which Scrooge believes was nothing more than to skipping the work or minting money in the name of charity. The play, through various sequences, proceeds employing mythological themes and divine spirits and ghastly images to make him realize his life in the past, future and the sanctity and blissful bounties of Christmas. The student actors, especially Guniderpal Thakur, Ashita, Arjun R. Singh, Abhey Vikram, Shubham Rasthore, Amandeep Singh, Amritpal Singh Arora, Yash Karan Singh, Preetwinnder , Seerat Singh, displayed emotional expressions with maturity. Other credits were shared by director Zubin Mehta, KwiSuk Kang, K.S. Chetri, Renu Pant Vandana Saxena, Tina Shah and Inderjit Grewal for making it a sleek production. Principal of the school, Dr H.S. Dhillon, welcomed the guests. |

Nine of the total 13 accused in the Burail Jail opted to avail the opportunity. As per the orders of the court the accused would be shifted to Kashmir jail on October 14 and brought back on November 3. Though Sabeena and her husband told the court they wanted to stay back, it was informed that there presence before the trial court in Kashmir court was required on October 17. The Chandigarh Police has been asked to make security arrangements and coordinate with the J and K Police to ensure safe passage for the accused. Court directs Centre to take decision on Talwar
Chandigarh, October 12 An Additional Professor, Department of Cardiology, Dr Anil Grover, has challenged the appointment of Dr Talwar to the post. He has also prayed that directions be issued to the respondents to hold selection for two posts of Professor in the department by a competent selection committee constituted under the PGIMER Act. Dr Grover has also prayed that Dr Talwar be restrained from acting as professor and head. Resuming the hearing of the petition filed by Dr Grover, the Bench pointed to the claims made in the additional affidavit filed by the Union Government in the matter. As per the affidavit, Dr Talwar, who was appointed Director on March 23, 2004, was allowed by the institute body and the appointment committee of Cabinet to function as professor and head, Department of Cardiology, in addition to his job as Director. The affidavit also said that many previous Directors of the PGIMER had also continued to function as professor and heads while occupying the post of Director. This, the affidavit said, was done so as to gainfully utilise their expertise in their chosen field. It further adds that the continuation of Dr Talwar, who is an eminent cardiologist, as professor and head does not in any way affect the claim of the petitioner to the post. Incidentally, Dr Grover, who had appeared in the interview for the post held in June, 2002, much before Dr Talwar’s appointment as Director, had not been selected by the selection committee on merit. He was again not found fit for appointment to the post in the fresh interviews conducted in 2005. The affidavit further says that even though Dr Talwar was allowed to function as professor and head due to his eminent stature, the entire matter would now be placed before the institute body/appointment committee of Cabinet for decision in light of a Supreme Court judgment in a similar matter. Noting that the affidavit clearly says that the matter of appointment of Dr Talwar as professor and head is to be placed before the institute body/appointment committee of the Cabinet, the Bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Nijjar, while directing the Union Government to take final decision, adjourned the matter to November 13. Interestingly, the counsel for the Union Government today informed the court that the Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam would argue the matter from the next hearing onwards. |

Notice on PIL challenging panchayat resolution
Chandigarh, October 12 Through the resolution, the panchayat had agreed to exchange over 80 kanals of shamlat (village common land) land in the village with a similar piece of land at Raipur Khurd village of the same district. Challenging the same, the petitioners, Mr Bhagwan Sarup and 26 other residents of the village, have alleged that the resolution was passed in arbitrary and illegal manner for extraneous considerations. They have stated that while the cost of the land in their village is more than Rs 15 crore, the land that is being offered to them does not cost more than one crore. The petition also alleges that the decision was part of a conspiracy hatched by some colonisers acting in league with some state government officers to grab valuable land, located in a prime location with the help of members of the panchayats. The village land falls in the proposed Sector 85 of Mohali. The petition states that the land is being exchanged for land in another village so that colonisers can make crores of rupees from the sale of the land. Apart from pointing out that majority of the members of the panchayat, who had earlier supported the proposal, have backed out, claiming that they had been misled by sarpanch Harbans Lal and another panch, the petitioners have also stated that no notice was ever served on the gram panchayat regarding the move. Interestingly, this is the second case of this kind that has been filed in the High Court in recent times, the earlier one having been filed by residents of Sukhgarh village. In that case also the sarpanch and some members have allegedly bartered the interests of the village for extraneous considerations. Today the Division Bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Nijjar issued notice to the respondents for November 23. |
