Inzamam’s disciplinary hearing begins
Verdict not expected before Friday
H. S. Rao

London, September 27
The crucial two-day disciplinary hearing of Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul Haq began here today behind closed doors at the Oval, the very scene of high drama following the ball tampering charge being laid against his side.

A verdict will be out not before 24 hours of the hearing coming to an end and till then the fate of the Pakistan captain will continue to hang in balance.

The hearing will see Inzamam defend himself against the two charges laid by umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove relating to ball tampering and bringing the game into disrepute during the fourth Test against England at the Oval last month.

The Pakistani side is fielding three expert witnesses — Geoffrey Boycott, Simon Hughes and John Hamshire, a former Test cricketer turned umpire.

All three have examined various photographs of the Oval ball and their statements could have a huge bearing on the verdict to be announced by ICC Chief Match Referee and arbitrator Ranjan Madugalle.

Coach Bob Woolmer and Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Shaharyar Khan are also present to assist Inzamam besides a top-notch legal team.

The media frenzy over the controversy was gaining heat with reports on the hearing featuring prominently across the two leading dailies — The Times and The Guardian.

Under the headline “ICC facing recipe for anarchy as Inzamam awaits fate”, The Times said although the heat had gone out of the issue, from the ICC’s viewpoint it was important to establish that the authority of the umpire could not be undermined.

“...if a precedent is set that a Test captain can disregard the umpires without penalty, it would be a recipe for anarchy,” it said.

The report also said the outcome of the hearing will have a bearing on the future of Hair.

“The other matter that may depend on the outcome concerns the future of Hair.... Whether or not to appoint Hair — a strong, fair, but in the view of many sub-continental cricketers, overbearing official — is delicate in the extreme.” The Guardian said evidence had emerged strongly suggesting that Inzamam was persuaded by others to protest against ball-tampering.

Quoting a dressing room source, it said Inzamam came off the field indignant and apparently still uncertain why the ball had been changed.

“The refusal to take the field may not have been his idea but that of Waqar Younis, the touring team’s bowling coach or one of the other senior figures in or around the dressing room at the time,” it said.

The source said that Waqar, who was suspended and fined in 2000 when found guilty of changing the condition of the ball in Colombo, took Inzamam into the lavatory for a secret discussion at the start of the tea interval from which point the situation spiralled out of control, the report said.

“By the time that Inzamam was persuaded to take the players back on to the field, having failed to do so when the umpire came out after tea, the match had been awarded to England.” — PTI

Vengsarkar made Chief Selector

Dilip Vengsarkar Mumbai, September 27
Batting great Dilip Vengsarkar was today appointed as Chairman of the Selection Committee as the Cricket Board re-constituted some of its high-profile committees and vested key responsibilities on elite former cricketers.

Vengsarkar, a former captain who played 116 Tests and 129 one-dayers, took over the hot seat from the controversial Kiran More whose four-year term had come to an end.

Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev was appointed as Chairman of the National Cricket Academy’s Board, replacing another legend Sunil Gavaskar who however was retained as Chairman of BCCI’s Technical Committee.

Former left-arm spinner Venkatpathy Raju was another new entrant in the five-member selection panel as a representative of the South Zone in place of V. B. Chandrasekhar.

The appointments were announced by Treasurer N. Srinivasan after the 77th Annual General Meeting here in which incumbent Sharad Pawar was formally declared elected un-opposed as President for a two-year term.

Vengsarkar replaced More not only as the West Zone nominee but also as the panel’s chief.

The other three members of the committee -- North’s Bhupinder Singh Sr, East’s Ranjib Biswal and Central’s Sanjay Jagdale — were re-appointed for a two-year term.

Sanjeev Sharma, former India pacer who has also represented Delhi and Railways, was nominated as the Chairman of the National Junior Selection Committee in place of incumbent Pravin Amre. — PTI

Mohammad Nisar Trophy
UP back on track after poor start

Dharamsala, September 27
Despite making a poor start and losing its top order batsmen cheaply to a fine bowling spell by Mohammad Asif, the Uttar Pradesh team consolidated their innings to finish at 269 for seven wickets in 90 overs at the close of the first day of the four-day Mohammad Nisar Trophy here today.

The Sialkot bowling attack suffered a jolt when after a fine spell of 6.1 overs and claiming two wickets, Mohammad Asif retired hurt after spraining a muscle.

As UP captain Mohammad Kaif was taken ill last night and had high fever, Suresh Raina led the side but he was out cheaply caught by Shoaib Malik off Asif, at a score of just five, after facing 13 balls.

Capitalising on Asif’s exit, Uttar Pradesh batsmen did some quick damage control, with Peeyush Chawla making 48 from 55 balls and Rizwan Shamshad remaining unbeaten on 60 from 158 balls.

Sarfraz Ahmed and Tahir Mughal took two wickets each, while Abdul Rehman sent Jyoti Yadav back to the pavilion.

Talking to The Tribune, Azmat Rana, coach of the Sialkot team, said, “Things would have been much different had Mohammad Asif had not retired hurt. He is likely to be back in action tomorrow. Besides, we are also missing Rana Naveed, who couldn’t come for the tournament. The very presence of Asif puts psychological pressure on the opposition.”

“The wicket also seemed a bit under-prepared and the ball was keeping low at times. But we hope to confine UP to less than 300 runs, which would be an achievable target in these conditions,” he added.

The Sialkot coach said the 14-hour bus journey to Dharamsala did take a toll on the players and some of them were feeling exhausted.

On the other hand, commenting on his batting performance today, Peeyush Chawla said a target of over 300 would be defendable and since he had recently performed well in the under-19 team in Pakistan, he would like to continue the winning spree.

Rizwan Shamshad said the senior players in the side led from the front today by putting a respectable total on the board. “It was a good innings and I would like to complete it in style tomorrow.”

He further said that the absence of Kaif had definitely put more responsibility on him and other senior players in the team. From being 109 for five at one stage, we definitely made a good comeback in the game today, he said.

Sania enters 2nd round
Sets up another duel with Martina Hingis

Seoul, September 27
Sania Mirza set up another duel with Martina Hingis with a come-from-behind win against local wild card Lee Ye-Ra 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the $145,000 Korea Open here today.

It needed her some goading as Sania overcame an opening set deficit to thrash the Korean wild card 3-6, 6-0, 6-0.

In another first round match, top seed Martina Hingis thrashed Dane qualifier Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-2 to set up another encounter with Sania.

In their previous encounter in the semifinals of the Sunfeast Open in Kolkata last week, the Hyderabadi ace had lost to Hingis 0-6, 1-6.

Playing against the unheralded Korean, Sania was jolted out of her inertia as her opponent stunned the Indian by winning the first set.

That served a wake up call and Sania raised her game by a few notches. Her power-packed forehands were landing on the court again and winners flowed from her racquet as she decimated the Korean in the subsequent two sets, during which she didn’t drop a single game. — UNI

Eves go down fighting 2-3

Madrid, September 27
Indian eves paid the penalty for their lethargic start as six-time champions Holland sneaked home 3-2 in the opening match of the women’s field hockey World Cup here today.

Holland caught their rivals napping, pumping in two goals in the first half and then another early in the second half before the Indians woke up.

Surinder Kaur scored a brace to narrow the margin as India turned the heat on the last edition’s runner-up at Perth, but the horse had bolted by then.

In fact, India could have snatched a point from the Orange team if only Deepika had made a clean hit after a collecting long pass on top of the circle in the 54th minute.

The referee allowed the goal but the television umpire over-ruled it after replays showed it came of the player’s shoes.

The Indians were clearly outplayed in the first period and the initial phase of the second by the Dutch who caught them off guard with their pace and efficient stick work.

Maartje Paumen opened up the scoring for the Netherlands as early as in the third minute when she scored from a penalty corner. Holland dominated ball possession and the action was very much restricted to the Indian half. Sylvia Karres rode on the momentum to find the net in the 31st minute and double the lead. The lead was tripled soon.

The Indians won their first penalty corner of the game in the 66th minute, Surinder Kaur scored of a neat deflection of the shot. Less than four minutes to go, Surinder Kaur beat the Dutch goalie for her second goal. — PTI

Gurmit Hockey

Chandigarh, September 27
Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) moved into the quarterfinals of the SN Vohra’s 36th All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament, defeating Chandigarh Hockey Academy 3-1 at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here today. In another match, Ropar Hawks shocked Sikh Regimental Centre (SRC), Ramgarh, 3-1 to move into the pre-quarterfinals.

For local favourites Chandigarh Hockey Academy, it was indeed an unlucky day as they conceded three goals after having taken the lead as early as in the fifth minute through a short corner conversion by Dharamvir Singh. Encouraged by yesterday’s performance against Signals, CHA showed promise early on, but as the minutes ticked away the youngsters found the going tough against ONGC.

A field goal by ONGC’s Amarjit three minutes before the interval saw the two sides drawing level but just one minute after resumption, Amarjit struck once again to put the visitors ahead 2-1.

A goal off a penalty corner by Anurag Raguvanshi in the 55th minute finally tilted the scales in favour of ONGC.

Chandigarh Hockey Academy’s promising defender Simardeep’s well-executed drag-flick off a penalty corner beat the rival defenders midway into the second session but unluckily, the ball struck the horizontal. In all, CHA earned four penalty corners while ONGC could force only three.

In the second match played under floodlights, Ropar Hawks upset Sikh Regimental Centre, Ramgarh, to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. Earlier, they had beaten COE, Patiala.

Incidentally, all goals came in the first quarter with Ropar Hawks drawing first blood in the seventh minute through a field goal by Major Singh. One minute later, a penalty corner converted by Kulbir Singh boosted the tally to 2-0 in favour of the Ropar team.

Undeterred by the setback, the Army outfit attacked relentlessly and eventually their effforts bore fruit when off a short corner in the 12th minute, Harjit Singh found the target to reduce the margin 1-2. However, Ropar Hawks, in a counter attack forced a penalty corner in the 14th minute, which was converted by skipper Varinder Kumar (3-1). Thereafter, the two sides toiled hard to score but further success eluded them.

Thursday’s fixtures: Punjab Police v RCF: 2.45 pm; ITBP v Ropar Hawks: 4.15 pm; IAF v Central Railway: 6 pm.
