GMCH to get more neurosurgeons

Chandigarh, September 27
The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, has plans to add more consultant-neurosurgeons and senior residents in neurosurgery.

The services of Neurosurgery for conducting operations of various types of brain tumors, tumors of the spinal cord and cases of neurotrauma are being provided regularly. The department has been conducting about 25-30 surgeries per month.

These facilities got an impetus a few years back due to availability of CT scan within the premises. The institution has plans to set up an MRI scan soon, a press note issued by the UT Administration said.

41 examined at HIV awareness camp

Chandigarh, September 27
As many as 41 patients were examined at an HIV/ AIDS and health awareness camp organised by the Servants of the People Society in collaboration with the UT AIDS Control Society in Burail village here today.

Over 300 people attended the camp in which free medicine for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and reproductive tract infection (RTIs) were given to 11 patients. The attendants were also given an demonstration on the right way to use condoms for prevention of HIV/AIDS/RTIs/STDs and unwanted pregnancies.

PEC students donate blood

Chandigarh, September 27
As many as 350 volunteers of the NSS unit of the Punjab Engineering college here donated blood at a camp organised in collaboration with the Rotary Club, Chandigarh Central, at the college premises here today.

Apart from the students, Dr Vijay Gupta, Director, Punjab Engineering College, and Prof K.K. Garg, Dean Students Welfare, donated blood. — TNS

PGI OPDs closed on October 2

The OPDs at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) will remain closed on October 2 on account of Gandhi Jayanti and Dashera.

Emergency services will, however, be available. The OPDs will remain open on October 7( Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti).

Manav Mangal eves win TT title

The hosts Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21 C, won the prestigious girls’ Under-17 inter school table tennis tournament defeating Sacred Heart, Sector 26, by a margin of 3-1.

The third place was secured by the girls of New Public School, Sector 18. DAV Public School, Sector 8, defeated Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector-27, to win the Under-14 title. Manav Mangal bagged the third place in the category.

Under 17 years: (Girls Finals): Manav Mangal-21 b Sacred Heart-26; Richa lost to Meghna (9-11, 8-11,5-11); Kalyani b Manya (11-7, 11-6, 11-6); Kaveri b Suhalika (9-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-3); Kalyani b Meghna (11-8, 11-4, 11-8).

For third and fourth positions: New Public School-18, Chd b Bhavan Vidyalaya-27, by 3-1; Upkriti lost to Ramandeep (5-11, 9-11, 12-10, 9-11); Parul b Arshdeep (13-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-8); Deepika b Divya (11-8, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5); Upkriti beat Arshdeep (13-11, 11-8, 11-5).

Kabaddi: SGGS college win

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College (SGGS), Sector 26, beat BAM Khalsa College of Garhshankar by 52-27 in the inter-zonal kabaddi (men) matches, being organised by Panjab University (PU) on the PU campus here today.

In football inter-zonal league tournament, GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar got the better of DAV College, Hoshiarpur by 2-0. Kulwinder Singh and Sukhdeep Singh scored one goal each.

In another match between SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, and BAM Khalsa College, Garhshankar, the former won by 2-1. For winners, the goals were netted by Balwinder Singh while Mandip Singh hit the solitary goal for BAM college.

Results: Kabaddi: SGGS, Chd, b BAM Khalsa College, Garhshankar 52-27; LLR Govt College; Dhudike b GGD SD College, Hariana 62-28; SGGS College, Chd b LLR Govt College; and Dhudike 23-18; GGD SD College, Hariana b BAM Khalsa College, Garhshankar 60-14.

Prakriti wins 50m swimming event

Prakriti Sharma of Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, emerged winner in the girls’ 50 metre free style event (under 19) clocking 32.94 seconds during the ongoing inter school sports meet held at different venues. The swimming meet was held at Government College, Sector 11, pool here today.

In the handball event held at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, eves of Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, beat GMSSS, Sector 19, by a margin of 8-2. The hosts GGSSS, Sector 23, defeated the softball girls’ team of GMSSS, Sector 10, in a well contested match 10-9.

Adventure camp ends

Chandigarh, September 27
The 12-day sports adventure camp for NCC Naval wing cadets, which began on September 16, concluded at the Sukhna Lake here today.

At least 40 cadets, including 18 girls, were trained in sailing whalers, cadet class boats, kayaking and boat pulling.

The highlight of the camp was an anti-drug rally on boats organised along the promenade of the lake.

Led by a whaler under sails, a row of boats carrying placards sailed along, with cadets performing a street play on the boats, imploring the youth to wean away from drugs.
