Arterial grafts better than bypass surgery: doc
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 31
The multiple arterial grafts have opened new vistas in beating heart surgery by way of providing more longevity and saving the operated persons from the risk of recurrence since the venal grafts, although easier to perform, tended to block again after 10 to 15 years.

Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Chairman, Cardiac Sciences at Ludhiana Mediciti Hospital here, said, addressing a press conference here today, in the cardiac bypass surgery, different types of conduits (tubes) were used to bypass the blocked heart arteries to avoid an attack and give a long life to the patient.

He said efforts were now being made to go for arterial grafts in cardiac bypass procedures and more the arterial grafts, better the long- term results. If more than one arterial grafts were used, patient could be safely promised a long span of life without the need for any more surgical correction.

Citing a recent case, Dr Bedi informed that 32-year-old Jagroop Singh Ruby of Amritsar had suffered a heart attack and had an angiogram done which showed severe blockage along with a reduced heart function. He was brought to Ludhiana Mediciti where the patient underwent a total arterial (triple) beating heart bypass using his internal mammary and both radial arteries.

Similarly, a senior specialist doctor, who suffered a major heart attack in Bathinda, was operated upon in the midst of the attack and given a triple arterial grafts again on a beating heart.
