Time to sow maize, say PAU scientists
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 31
Punjab skies are expected to remain cloudy with possibility of showers at some places in the next two to three days.

PAU scientists have advised the farmers to start sowing maize (Paras and JH-3459 varieties).

It is also the time to apply last dose of nitrogen-based fertilisers (35 kg urea per acre) to the earlier sown hybrid maize and other high yielding varieties.

Farmers have been advised to irrigate paddy two days after the ponded water has seeped into the soil.

In no case, the field should be allowed to crack up. It is also the time to keep a watch on the crop, on weekly basis, and detect any instance of insect attack, particularly of hopper or leaf folder.

Field reports indicate appearance of bacterial blight in some paddy areas. Fungicide spray will not help to control it.

For managing the blight do not pond water and it should not be allowed to move to the healthy crop fields, the scientists advise.

Moreover, farmers should avoid excessive doses of nitrogen to paddy. The fields, where sheath blight has appeared, ‘Khabbal’ grass should be removed from bunds and water channels.

Sugarcane farmers would do well to use ‘trash twist method’ to prop up the crop and avoid lodging.

To ensure healthy cane, infested shoots effected with different borers should be collected and destroyed, particularly Gurdaspur borer, at weekly interval.

Scientists also want farmers to pay attention to fodder crops. Farmers should sow leguminous and non-leguminous crops in mixture to improve the nutritive value of the fodder: maize, cowpea, guara.

Vegetable growers will do well to sow desi varieties of raddish — Pusa Chetki and Punjab Ageti. One acre requires 4 kg to 5 kg seed.

It is also the time to start transplanting main season varieties of cauliflower. Farmers should drain out excess rain water from the vegetable fields.
