Sukhdeep wins javelin throw title

Sukhdeep Kaur of St. Soldier School won the top honours while Amandeep Saini of the same school and Salma of Government Model Senior Secondary School secured second and third, positions, respectively, in the javelin throw (U-18 girls) of the First Junior Distt. Athletic meet, which concluded at Phase 8 here today.

Mr Harman Preet Singh Prince, Vice-President of the Municipal Council, Mohali, gave away the prizes to the winners. Mr Jaswant Singh Kumbra was the guest of honour at the prize-distribution function.

Synthetic track for Devi Lal complex in Panchkula

Panchkula, August 31
To upgrade the facilities conforming to international standards, a synthetic track costing Rs 4 crore would be laid at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex here.

This was announced by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at the opening ceremony of 21st Haryana State Junior Athletics Championship, which he declared open at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula near here today.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hooda said that the state government has chalked out a new policy for promotion of sports and assured all assistance of the state government to provide best available facilities to sportspersons.

He said that Rs 40 crore have been especially earmarked to construct sports stadia in rural areas so as to channelise the energies of the youth and provide them an opportunity to exhibit their talent.

The Chief Minister announced to give Rs 2 lakh to the Haryana State Athletics Association, the organiser of the three-day championship. Besides this, every participating player would get one kg of ‘desi ghee”.

In the meet over 800 athletes from all districts have been participating. The events would be held in four age groups of under 20, under 18, under 16 and under 14 in the championship. The Chief Minister gave away prizes to the first three winners of the 800 meter race held in the category of boys under 20. Jagdeep of Sonepat was first and Sunil also of Sonepat ranked second Jaswant Singh of Jind was third.

Among other present on the occasion were Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan, Parliamentary Secretary Krishna Pandit, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister M.L. Tayal, Political Adviser to the Chief Minister Prof. Virender and other senior officers of the district administration.

Anju, Mandeep win 800m race

Anju of Sonepat got the first position in the 800 m race in girls’ under-16 category in the 21st Haryana State Junior Athletics Championship, started at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3, here, today.

Sonepat’s Ritu was second and Meena of Jhajjar got the third place. Earlier, the championship was inaugurated by the Haryana Chief Minster, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The other results: 800m: boys’ u-20: Jagdeep of Sonepat 1st (1:59:00), Sunil of Sonepat 2nd (1:59:20), Jaswant of Jind 3rd (2:00:15).

Boys’ u-18: Baljeet of Bhiwani 1st (1:59:70), Bir Singh of Faridabad 2nd (1:59:70), Sanjeev of Rohtak 3rd (2:01:33).

St Kabir win carrom tourney

St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44 D, defeated defending champion DAV Public School, Sector 8, in the under-14 category, while in the under-17 category, St Kabir School, Sector 26, beat DAVPS, Sector 8, to win the UT inter-school Carrom Boys Tournament at St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School here today. The other results are:

Under 14 (final): St. Joseph’s-44 beat DAVPS - 8 3-0, Shantanu beat Shubham 11-0, Ojal Anand beat Piyush 13-0, Ekansh beat Saksham 25-0. Under 17 (final): St Kabir-26 beat DAVPS-8 3-0, Varun Sood beat Anuj Madan by 19-0, Piysh Sood beat Ankur Madan 17-0, Rishab beat Rahul 15-0. — TNS

Engg Dept scraps 35 complaint centres

Chandigarh, August 31
The Chandigarh Administration today scrapped all its 35 complaint centres of the Engineering Department spread across the city.

The development follows the successful running of the Citizen Facilitation Centre of the department, where citizens can lodge all their complaints at a single number, 4639999, round the clock any day.

Till date, a total of 7,040 complaints have been redressed. On an average, 200 calls are received every day.

Now calls are received on four lines and around 10 operators work day and night in three shifts at the centre.
