Abolished posts in schools to be revived
Chandigarh, August 29
A meeting of the Punjab Council of Ministers held here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today approved to convene two-day session of the state Assembly from September 14. The council also approved the revival of abolished posts in schools and creation of new posts in polytechnic institutes.

Purview of dist courts in civil suits enhanced
Chandigarh, August 29
Making a far-reaching amendment to Section 39 of the Punjab Courts Act, 1918 by issuing an ordinance, the state government has empowered the courts of the District Judges and the Additional District Judges to hear all appeals against the judgements of subordinate courts regardless of any monetary (pecuniary) jurisdiction.

1.225 kg heroin seized; 3 held 
Ferozepore, August 29
The Ferozepore police has arrested three persons on the charges of drug peddling and seized 1.225 kg heroin, worth over Rs 1.25 crore in international market, from their possession.

Mentally challenged finds temporary home
Pathankot August 29
Taxi drivers found her roaming with her child in the Mamoon area. Mentally challenged, she cannot speak or make others understand what she wants. She carries a one-year-old child crying in her lap and waiting to be fed. A few philanthropists had tried to help her. However, they failed to comprehend what she wanted.

Assurance on Beant memorial

The governing body of the Beant Singh Memorial Society, at its meeting held at Punjab Raj Bhavan here today, resolved to speedily complete the memorial and other components of the project, with focus on highlighting the late Sardar Beant Singh’s commitment and vision for Punjab.

Dhindsa seeks action against govt
Sangrur, August 29
Regarding a news item, published in The Tribune on August 27 under caption “CAG raps Punjab for Rs 934-Cr cess misappropriation”, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, secretary-general of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and MP from Sangrur, has written to the Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation seeking what action had been taken by the Centre against the Punjab government for “misappropriating” Rs 934 crore collected as rural development cess during year 2001-05.

Effigies of CM, Chahal burnt

Hundreds of activists of the Youth Akali Dal (Badal) led by its district president, Mr Jaswinder Singh Jassi, yesterday burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and his media adviser Bharat Inder Singh Chahal and staged a dharna in front of the mini secretariat here to lodge their protest against the holding of path by them in a gurdwara located in Ropar district, “seeking physical harm of former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal”. — TNS

Thousands of activists of the PWD Mulazam Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, who staged a massive dharna in front of New Moti Bagh Palace, the private residence of the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to press their demands, today threatened to gherao the Vidhan Sabha during its next session if their demands were not met.

Farmers resent rail survey
Bathinda, August 29
Farmers of Talwandi Sabo and nearby villages are up in arms against the ongoing survey for laying the railtrack between Maur Mandi and Rama Mandi via Talwandi Sabo. They have formed a Jameen Bachao Sangharsh Committee to take up the matter with the government. As per a note issued here, the farmers today held a meeting in this regard and decided to hand over their charter of demands to Amarinder Singh, and Parkash Singh Badal. — TNS

Sampooranta Divas holiday

In the wake of the Sampooranta Divas, the district administration today announced that all government, semi-government, board and corporation offices in Bathinda will remain closed on Wednesday. Rain flattens paddy
Gurdaspur, August 29
Heavy rains that lashed the region in the past two days have caused extensive damage to paddy crop in the district. In many areas the crop has been flattened in the fields due to heavy showers and strong winds.

Four car-borne persons allegedly made an attempt to abduct a woman residing in Vaid Tirath Ramwali Gali here.

3 of family killed in mishap
Ropar, August 29
Three members of a family were killed while one sustained serious injuries when a car in which they were travelling fell into the Sirhind canal near Chamkaur Sahib subdivision, about 20 km from here, this evening. The deceased were identified as 35-year-old Malkiat Singh, Kulwinder Singh and Daljit Singh of Naunumajra. The seriously injured 55-year-old Malkit Singh of Janetpur village was initially admitted to the government hospital in Chamkaur Sahib but later he was referred to the Civil Hospital, Ropar.

Woman held for paramour’s murder

The police today claimed to have solved a murder case with the arrest of a woman in this connection. The police has also recovered a gold ring and a mobile handset of the victim from her.

19 proclaimed offenders nabbed

The district police has arrested 19 proclaimed offenders wanted in various cases. They were presented in the local court here.

Petrol station staff beaten up
Ropar, August 29
Five employees of a petrol station situated on the Raipur-Nangal road, 15 km from here, in Nawanshahr district were brutally beaten by 15 persons armed with sharp-edged weapons. Three employees — Partap Singh, Raj Kumar and Abhisek Kumar — were admitted in serious condition to the Civil Hospital, Balachaur.

First session of rural varsity to start in 2007
Talwandi Sabo (Bathinda), August 29
Punjabi University Vice Chancellor Mr S.S. Boparai said today that the Chief Minister’s announcement of establishing a rural university at Talwandi Sabo would materialise in the current year. To be named after Guru Gobind Singh, the varsity would witness its first academic session in 2007.

700 absentee teachers to face axe
Chandigarh, August 29
In a significant move, the Punjab Government has decided to dismiss about 700 government schoolteachers from service. These teachers have been absent from duty for long periods ranging from five years to 20 years. Most of these teachers are believed to have gone abroad and have not returned to join their duties.

Rayat students on warpath too
Ropar, August 29
Students of Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology today resorted to a protest today against the “illegal” detention and beating up of six second-year students of the college by the police near Asron, about 10 km from here. The six students were picked up by the police late night from the hostel as they were protesting against “poor” quality of meals served in the hostel.
