Fighting disease, govt apathy
Bipin Bhardwaj
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 28
Bharat Bhushan Bhardwaj, a national-level boxer who clinched the title of the best boxer of Punjab in 1986, has emerged victorious in yet another fight. This time there were no spectators to watch and cheer for him, rather he was surrounded by a team of surgeons.

Admitted to the PGI with heart problem, Bharat Bhushan Bhardwaj, a resident of Hoshiarpur, underwent angioplasty here. Though he brought laurels to the state during his hay days, no one from the government came to pay a courtesy call on him at the hospital.

Employed with the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) at Hoshiarpur, he had being contesting in the “light flyweight” category and had won two gold and one silver medals after participating in seven national-level competitions held at Mumbai, Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Delhi, Kanpur, Katak (Orissa) and Faridkot.

He was adjudged the best boxer of Punjab in the light flyweight (45 to 48 kg) category in the All-India National Championship held at Faridkot in 1986.

He complained of chest congestion around 20 days ago and went to a private cardiac centre at Jalandhar. The cardiologist suggested him to undergo angioplasty, but the expenditure involved there compelled him to come to the PGI, Chandigarh.

His treatment was undertaken on priority here. He expressed thanks to the team of doctors led by Dr Yesh Pal Sharma, who operated upon him for angioplasty and discharged him in less than a week.

He, however, felt a bit disappointed as no one from the government turned up to see him.

Dr Yesh Pal Sharma, Associated Professor, Department of Cardiology, said the right coronary artery of Bhardwaj was completely blocked while there was around 25 per cent blockage in the left one. He said ballooning and stenting was done. He said 25 per cent blockage in the left artery was cleared with the help of medicines only.

Admn for more senior docs for emergency services
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 28
To rationalise emergency services in the city, top officials from the UT Administration, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Government Medical Collage and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, and General Hospital (GH), Sector 16, today hold a meeting and discussed important proposals.

A presentation regarding the proposals was also made to Gen Rodrigues, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT on rationalisation of emergency services in the city after the meeting. Mr Krishan Mohan, Home Secretary, Chandigarh, Prof KK Talwar, Director, PGIMER, Prof H.M. Swami, Director-Principal, GMCH, Dr MS Bains, Director Health Services, UT, Prof Harsh Mohan, Medical Superintendent, GMCH, and Prof Raj Bahadur, Officiating Medical Superintendent, PGIMER, attended the meeting.

It was proposed that strengthening of the emergency services in General Hospital could be done by employing at least four Senior Residents (AMOs with postgraduate qualification) in the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Orthopedics. These senior residents would support the consultant on duty in these departments, especially looking after the emergency services.

The transportation of patients from GH to the PGI could be done to and fro without much hassle after mutually talking to a Nodal officer of the Emergency Services. The GMCH has only one neurosurgeon, and the PGI should give technical support to the hospital by posting a neurosurgery consultant at the GMCH on alternate days.

It was also proposed that senior residents, at least six, should be employed at the GMCH with immediate effect to ensure affective management of head injury cases in the unit of neurosurgery. At least two neurosurgeon consultants should be employed at the GMCH on contract basis. A unit of neurosurgery should be carved out with its independent infrastructure at the GMCH with dedicated beds for head injuries, said Dr Raj Bhadur.
