PGI fortnight on eye donation

Chandigarh, August 25
The Ophthalmology Department, PGI, will observe a national fortnight on eye donation’ till September 8.

A press note said that the aim of the fortnight was to promote awareness among people about eye donation.

In addition to this, stress would be laid on the prevention of corneal blindness and emphasising the importance of eye donation. The Eye Department has made an attempt to rope in various youth groups, charitable organisations, NGOs, senior citizen organisations as well as teachers and students through this programme.

Lectures and demonstrations would be undertaken over the next two weeks. Slides would also be shown at various cinema halls in the city.

PGI employees threaten stir

Chandigarh, August 25
The PGI Employees Union has condemned the Director of the institute, Prof K.K. Talwar, for not keeping his word on the implementation of the second cadre review of engineering staff approved in December 2005.

A press note issued by Mr Sat Pal Bhardwaj, president of the union, said the management had delayed the release of payment in lieu of uniforms for more than 600-700 workers of the engineering staff even though the payments of all other categories of employees had been released.

The union threatened to launch indefinite fast, if its demands were not met.

2 city players selected for Dhyan Chand matches

Two local hockey players, Dharamvir Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh, belonging to the Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 42, will participate in the u-18 Major Dhyan Chand Anniversary Exhibition matches scheduled to be held at MDC National Stadium, New Delhi on August 29.

The matches are being conducted as a part of the unique ceremony to celebrate India’s 1936 Berlin Olympic hockey gold by Major Dhyan Chand-led Indian team.

Elated over his selection in the prestigious tournament, Dharamvir expressed his feelings before leaving for New Delhi this morning. “My aim is to make my city proud and I am sure that if I could play up to my potential, I will surely come out with flying colours”.

Dharamvir, who was part of the Indian Hockey team (u-18) for the Four-Nation International Challenge tournament held at Singapore earlier this month, has always been among the leading players of the academy during his participation in various international tournaments.

He said, “Being part of the tournament, I learnt many things. My confidence level has definitely boosted and it has made me mentally tough.”

“Speed which is my biggest asset. I basically concentrate on netting the ball first, without giving much time to the opposite side to take position”, he told further. Equally excited was Rupinder Pal Singh, for whom it’s going to be his first major event. “ Since it is my first major exposure, I am very thrilled at the fact that I have caught the attention of the Indian Hockey Federation. At the moment, our coach taught us to be mentally tough and not to lose presence of mind at a given situation.”

Their coach Jasbir Singh Bajwa said, “Dharamvir and Rupinder Pal Singh have been under my training at the academy since in 2002. Dharamvir plays on the right half and is outrightly a player with the speed and great distribution sense with the tremendous accuracy level.”

Rupinder Pal Singh is a penalty corner specialist which Team India is desperately in need. With consistence performance, he has graduated to be in the big league of players and I hope that he will definitely make his name in this sport.”

Swimming championship on Sept 4, 5

The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Bhaddal, will organise the 3rd Inter-College Swimming Championship for boys and girls of the college on September 4, 5 at the Nehru Stadium swimming pool here, said Mr R.S Pathania, Director, Sports, IET Bhaddal, here today. The winners will participate in the north zone championship to be organised by Panjab University, Chandigarh, he added.

Function on C’wealth games

Chandigarh, August 25
The Chandigarh Olympic Association celebrated “1500 days to go” celebrations for Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi in 2010. The function, which was held at DAV Public School, Sector 8, today, apprised sportspersons about advantages of conducting such a mega event. A declamation contest was organised on the impact of conducting Commonwealth Games in India.

Swetabh Kumar (cricket) of DAV Academy, Sector 8, Seerat Kaur (handball) of Government Model Senior Secondary School-16 and Pearl (basketball) of KBDAV, Sector 7, were given prizes. Manpreet Bawa (handball) of DAV-8 got a consolation prize. TNS

MRS Academy to take on Surjit Academy in final

Chandigarh, August 25
MRS Academy, Amritsar, and Surjit Academy, Jalandhar, entered the finals defeating their opponent in the semifinals played at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here, today.

MRS Academy registered a convincing win over Baba Bakala Academy 4-1. Mandeep Singh of MRS opened the team’s account in the 4 th minute through penalty stroke. This was followed by another field goal through Kanwar Subeg three minutes later. Kanwar dodged the goalie and converted a penalty corner in the 21st minute of the play. The MRS were leading by three goals without conceding a single goal. During the 55th minute, Prabjinder getting a pass from the left flank, sent the ball home. Harsimran was the only contributors from the Bakala side, who executed a penalty corner successfully during the 39th minute of the play. Lovedeep Singh of MRS Academy was declared the Man of the Match.

The second semifinal match between Surjit Academy, Jalandhar, and SBKS Academy, Jalandhar, ended in a draw 1-1. The final verdict was given in favour of Surjit Academy on the basis of the maximum goal average. The decision had to be taken due to inclement weather conditions. Gurminder of Surjit Academy was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Defending champion St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-D, Chandigarh, won the under-14 Girls’ Carrom U.T. Inter-School tournament for the fourth year in-a-row. Sacred Heart-26 emerged the winner in the under-17 and under-19 girls’ event. The tournament was held at St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44-D, here, today.

St. Joseph’s School-44 b Sacred Heart-26 by 2-1; Himansi b Ankita by 12-8; Mansimar b Kriti by 18-0; Diksha lost Anjli by 8-11.

Order to enforce cable Act provisions

The Chandigarh Administration has stressed the enforcement and compliance of various provisions of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, as amended.

Mr Krishna Mohan, Home Secretary, has addressed a memoranda to the IGP, District Magistrate, SSP and SDMs, in which he has requested that necessary action be taken in this regard.

The Director, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has requested for the implementation of provisions of compulsory transmission/re-transmission of certain Doordarshan channels, including DD-I and DD news channel, by cable operators

As per the Act, officers have regulatory powers to seize equipment being used by the cable operator in case of a violation.

Food Inspector suspended

Chandigarh, August 25
Taking note of the incident in which the CBI caught a Food Inspector while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a juice vendor in Sector 7, the UT Health department has placed him under suspension.

The Director Health Service, UT, Dr M.S. Bains, said Sanjay Kumar Bharol, had been placed under suspension after the approval of the UT Health
