Sri Lanka beat India in football
Colombo, August 24 The two teams were tied 1-1 after extra time. With regulation time failing to yield any goal, India grabbed the lead in extra time when Lalramluaha “bent it like Beckham” from a freekick and the curling left-footer caught the entire Lankan defence napping, before finding the far post. Sri Lanka, however, equalised when Sadlan Perera converted a spot kick. It was a goalmouth melee in the Indian box and the referee upheld the Lankan appeal that one of the Indian defenders had handled the ball. For Lanka, reduced to a 10-member after Ras Locha received his second yellow card of the match, Sadlan Perera converted the spot kick to equalise. In the penalty shootout, Th Naoba Singh, Lal Kamal Bhowmik, Zaidinmawia Hmar, Sushil Singh and Baldeep Singh scored for India, while Lalramluaha, Rakesh Masih and Reisangmi Vashum failed with their shots. For Sri Lanka, Sudara Madusanka, Nadeeka Handi, BG Sivanka, Rohana Ruwantillake, Nimal Fernando and Nuwantha Charaka converted, while Sadlin Perera and Dumindu Hettiarachchi wasted their chances.

London, August 24 Woolmer is believed to be angry at team manager Zaheer Abbas’ lack of focussed leadership in the fall-out to Sunday’s controversial forfeiture of the fourth Test against England. A report in The Daily Telegraph, quoting a team source, said Woolmer was “reaching the end of his tether” and it would be no surprise if he resigned at the end of the one-day series against England. “Woolmer’s relations with Zaheer and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq have descended into acrimony,” the report said. Inzamam, on his part, felt that he could no longer trust his coach and suspected Woolmer of briefing the Pakistan Cricket Board behind his back. The realisation that they have forfeited a Test has slowly dawned on the Pakistan cricket authorities and there will be a major investigation into what exactly happened in the Oval dressing room on Sunday. “For the first time, details of what happened in the dressing room can be revealed. A picture has emerged of a confused and angry place where there was a lot of shouting and different advice being thrown at Inzamam,” it said. It is thought that Inzamam did not quite realise what his team had been accused of until he reached the dressing room. “His comprehension of the English language is limited and he may not have understood what Darrell Hair was saying to him when he changed the ball. It was only when he returned to the dressing room, and the penny dropped, that thoughts of refusing to take the field again began to form,” the report said. Woolmer, the paper also claimed, had listed two or three options to the team, none of which involved refusing to take the field when play restarted. “I am not sure how much of what Woolmer said was understood by Inzamam. Inzi decided the team would not go out,” a team source was quoted as saying. At tea break, the Pakistan dressing room was in chaos with PCB Chairman Shaharyar Khan, Dr Nasim, a member of the ad hoc cricket committee which runs Pakistan cricket, and England and Wales Cricket Board Chairman David Morgan giving advise to captain Inzamam. “Curiously enough, one man who should have played a decisive role, but did not, was Abbas. In fact, such was his detachment that at one stage on Sunday, while the debate raged in the dressing room, he was spotted on the balcony talking on his mobile phone,” the report said. — PTI |
Speed may step in to end impasse
London, August 24 “We have an indication from our lawyers that Speed will come,” said Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan at the team’s hotel here yesterday after meetings ended with no definitive statement about whether the upcoming one-day series against England would go ahead as planned. Officials from both boards met before Pakistan’s players held a meeting amongst themselves. Meanwhile, the PCB wants the ICC to conduct the disclipinary hearing against Inzamam-ul Haq before Monday, adding that it would have no objection if Clive Lloyd is appointed to deal with the matter in place of Ranjan Madugalle. “The board will have no objection if ICC appoints Lloyd for the case hearing,” a PCB spokesperson was quoted as saying on Geo TV. Pakistan had threatened to boycott the five-match one-day series if captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was banned as a result of charges of ball tampering and bringing cricket into disrepute following their forfeiture of the fourth Test against England at The Oval. A disciplinary hearing was due to take place tomorrow in London but was postponed yesterday because of the unavailabity of ICC chief match referee Ranjan Madugalle, who had been due to hear the case. In a statement, Speed said the fact that the one-dayers were taking place from August 30 to September 10 meant it would be “extremely difficult” for a hearing to take place during that period. Later in the day, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman David Morgan met with Pakistan counterpart Shaharyar and Inzamam for more than 30 minutes. Pakistan are to play a Twenty20 international in Bristol on Monday before the first ODI is held at Cardiff on Wednesday. — Agencies |
BCCI to hold AGM from September 27
Mumbai, August 24 Board Secretary Niranjan Shah said the venue for the AGM would be the Cricket Club of India (CCI). The AGM will be the first one in which Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, who defeated beleaguered former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya’s candidate Ranbir Singh Mahendra in the elections last year in Kolkata, will preside over. It will also be the first instance that the office-bearers would be elected for a two-year term, as per amendments of the BCCI constitution, carried out through a special general meeting earlier this year. The selection committee will also have a two-year term without the need to be re-appointed, as is the case at present. Meanwhile, the Indian teams for the next month’s tri-series in Kuala Lumpur and the subsequent ICC Champions Trophy in October-November would be chosen in Mumbai on September 3.

Spain destroyed Japan 104-55 to stay perfect, while the tournament hosts bowed out with a 1-4 record. New Zealand clinched a place in the knockout phase with an 86-75 win over a Panama team who failed to win a single game. The Tall Blacks finished on 2-3. European champions Greece held off a determined challenge from Turkey in a 76-69 victory that left them top of Group C with a 5-0 record. The knockout stage begins in Saitama on Saturday with the final on September 3. — Reuters |
Sandeep responding to treatment
Chandigarh, August 24 After a review of his medical condition, doctors were of the opinion that he would be kept in the ICU for two or three more days since he was still not past the stage of acquiring infection, his brother Bikramjit Singh said. Maintaining that family members, too, were not allowed in to visit Sandeep frequently, Bikramjit said that he had been retained in the ICU for constant monitoring of his vital organs. “Also, the doctors have warned him against exercising strain on his mind or talking too much. We are following their advice to the letter,” he maintained. While his mother, Daljit Kaur, was allowed to see Sandeep in the wee hours today, his father spent the better part of the day attending to villagers from his native place. Family members of the victim added, “Sandeep is likely to be fit as a fiddle in seven to 12 weeks. The doctors were satisfied with the way his recovery was progressing.” |

Meanwhile, Shikha Uberoi entered the second round of US Open qualifiers after a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Italian Sara Errani. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza will take on Croatian Karolina Sprem in the first round of the US Open starting August 28. — UNI |

He made his international debut in 1973 and went on to play at the highest level for 12 years, appearing in 57 Tests and 54 ODIs, including matches in each of the first three Cricket World Cups, in 1975, 1979 and 1983. The pinnacle of his career was undoubtedly his performances in Pakistan's 1977 tour of the West Indies where, against the home side’s legendary pace battery, he scored 517 runs, including an unbeaten 117 in Barbados, and took eight wickets at minimal cost.
