PAU staff hold rally against Audit Dept
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 24
The Punjab Agricultural University Employees Union today held a rally against the local audit department of the Punjab Government. The rally was held in protest against objections raised by the department against the decisions of the PAU Board of Management.

Addressing the employees, Mr DP Maur, president of the union said that the local Audit Department of the Punjab Government had raised “unjust” objections on pay scales of stenographers, farm workers, tractor drivers and special allowance of clerks, junior and senior assistants.

He said the settlement of 63 days agitation period of 1996 was also being reviewed by the local Audit Department. He observed that a review of such decisions after 10 to 14 years when these decisions had already been admitted by the same audit and arrears paid to the employees subsequently was not justified. How would the Audit Department make recoveries when hundreds of employees have already retired after getting these benefits, he asked.

Mr Amrit Pal, general secretary of the union, said the decision of the Audit Department was against the autonomy of the university and tantamount to contempt of the Supreme Court of India. He said the apex court had already said that although the Finance Department of the Punjab Government was a funding body to universities of Punjab, it had no right to interfere in the administrative decisions of the universities.
