Office-bearers
: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Shiromani Ragi Sabha: patron — Bhai Jaswant Singh; president — Bhai Ravinder Singh; senior-vice-president — Bhai Manjit Singh, vice-presidents — Bhai Gurcharan Singh and Bhai Gurkirat Singh. 

Nominated: Punjab Agro Foodgrains Corporation Director Amardeep Singh Cheema has been nominated member of the Working Group in Agriculture for the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Natya fest
: The Udaan arts group in collaboration with the S.D. College organised a nataya fest on Tuesday to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh. Punjabi plays, including ‘Geeli mitti da butt’, ‘Hun hor nahin’ written by Prof Sarbjeet Singh Aulakh were staged on the occassion.

: The Students Welfare Society and the Dainik Prarthana Sabha distributed tricycles, uniforms, pensions and ration among the poor at a function held under the chairmanship of DSP Naresh Kumar.

Play staged
: Bahu Rang Kala Manch depicted misuse of technology in killing the female foetus through a play directed by film maker, Mr Ashok Puri, on the second day of the Bharat Nirman Campaign on Tuesday.

HOUSE BURGLED:
Some unidentified persons allegedly entered into the houses of Mr Naranjan Singh of Avtar Nagar Mullanpur. They broke open the cupboard and stole gold ornaments and Rs 40,000. The police has registered a case under Sections 454, and 380 of the IPC. No arrest has been made so far. 

HELD FOR GAMBLING: Harjinder Singh and Gurinderjit Singh of Shakti Nagar Jagraon and Balwinder Singh of Pona were arrested by the police while gambling in a shop along the Kacha Malak road, Agwar Gujjran. The police seized Rs 26,500 and a set of playing cards from their possession. A case has been registered. 

POPPY HUSK SEIZED: The police seized 4.4 kg poppy husk from the glove box of a scooter (PB-23B-3949) in the Kothe Pona area. The scooterist, however, managed to run away. The police has impounded the scooter and registered a case. 

LIQUOR SEIZED: The Sidhwan Bet police arrested Chhinder Singh of Madepur from his village and seized 6.9 lt of illicit liquor. A case has been registered. 

Exhibition: Ms Vandana Munjal, jewellery designer, will hold a diamond and gems jewellery exhibition here from August 25 and 26. Ms Munjal will also launch here new collection, Haute Jewels, on the occasion, said a press note. “From long earrings, trendy bracelets, exquisite rings to elaborate visions of diamond sets at weddings, this years collection would be unique. The classic as well as contemporary has been merged with precious gems like emeralds, rubies, onyx, turquoise, corals and pearls selected from around the world,” the note said.

Traffic blocked
: Pendu Mazdoor Union activists blocked traffic for two hours on the Chandigarh-Jalandhar road on Tuesday to demand free power supply for the landless labourers irrespective of their caste and free units of power for dalits. 

Contests: Manisha, Arti Bajaj, Mandip Kaur, Jashandeep Kaur, Paramjit Singh, Phoolan Rani, Arzoo Sharma, Harpreet Kaur, Sunita won the first positions in the declamation, essay writing and chart-making competitions on the renewal and non-conventional energy sources at Govt. Senior Secondary School to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. 

Suvidha camp: As many 49 driving licenses were issued to students at a suvidha camp organised by the administration at R.K. Arya college on Tuesday. 

Blood donation: As many as 60 units were collected at a blood donation camp organised by the Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust at Golian village on Monday. 

Teachers flay govt: The SC /BC Adhyapak Union in a statement on Monday flayed the government for not granting step up scale to employees after four, nine and fourteen years of service and non-implementation of the Mandal Commission’s Report.

: The Army Wives Welfare Association organised a medical check-up and cancer detection camp to commemorate its 41st Raising Day. The camp was inaugurated by its president, Ms Poonam Gupta, for Army wives at Sujanpur on Sunday.

Youth held for firing at SI
: The police has arrested Ashok for allegedly firing at a Sub Inspector of the Crime Branch, Mr Ashok Kumar, near the court complex on Tuesday. No one was hurt in the incident. 

Property damaged: Two vehicles and other property belonging to Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam office in Sadhora was damaged by miscreants on Monday night during a protest by the residents of the area against the delay in repair of an overhead power cable by the UHBVN employees. The residents returned after the power supply was restored. 

PANIPAT
Five booked for gang-rape
: The police on Tuesday registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC against Rajpal, a resident of Thermal colony; and his accomplices Bharat Bhushan, Vinod, Ashok and Parveen for the alleged gang-rape of a resident of the Mahavir colony over the past six years. The victim had been employed by Rajpal for taking care of his old mother.

lauded: The Himachal Pradesh Divisional Accounts Officers Association lauded the services of Mr Ram Sital, Mr Ram Sital and Mr Jabh Singh Rana on their retirement, according to its president Mr R. K. Rekhi.
