Workshop on medical literature on the Net

Ludhiana, August 21
In a bid to update knowledge of medical professionals about relevance of the Internet in their respective specialties, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) organised a seminar on “medical literature search on the Internet” at Dumra Auditorium in the hospital here today.

The seminar was attended by a large number of doctors from the city and other major towns of Punjab. A hands-on workshop on surfing medical websites was also organised for the participating consultants, postgraduates and medical students.

The seminar opened with a lecture by Dr Jatinder Singh, Additional Professor in Pharmacology at Government Medical College, Amritsar, on suitable ways of retrieving medical information from the Internet.

During the lecture session, he elaborated upon the systematic strategy for searching medical literature and accessing related 
websites.

The attending doctors and medical students were asked to make optimum use of the Internet as a simple and effective tool of assimilating information and they were instructed to carry out various exercises on their laptops under the guidance of experts. Queries of the participants were addressed in an interactive session that followed.

Dr Amandeep Singh from Government Medical College, Amritsar, one of the instructors, informed the members of medical fraternity about some useful medical websites, which they could surf to acquire the desired information.

Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH, said the doctors should make maximum use of the Internet for improving the treatment strategies for the benefit of the patients. Dr S.C. Chopra, Dean Academics and Chairperson of the Computer Cell, said the DMCH had started special in-house training programme in IT for its doctors and other staff.

Dr Sanjeev Uppal, Convener, Computer Cell, said in the modern times, with plethora of information available on the Internet by click of a mouse, it had become imperative for a Net surfer to zero in on the literature and data relevant to his own interest.

Dr Sandeep Kaushal coordinated the proper technical back-up and infrastructure during the seminar.

Sangrur win softball tourney

Ludhiana, August 21
Sangrur scrambled past hosts Ludhiana in the final of the Punjab State Softball championship for boys, which concluded at the Ramgarhia Educational Complex, Miller Ganj, here yesterday.

Sangrur lads won the verdict 8-6 to emerge champions.

Earlier in the semifinals, Sangrur demolished Gurdaspur 16-1 while Ludhiana overcame Jalandhar 5-1 to set up the title clash. In the league matches, Sangrur beat Patiala 1-0 and Ludhiana got the better of Amritsar 14-3.
