Agricultural officers' workshop begins today
Ludhiana, August 21 The Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh, will inaugurate the conference and the Director of Agriculture, Punjab, Mr. B.S. Sidhu, will preside. The participants will be told about the endeavours of the university in developing high-yielding varieties and hybrids for different crops to provide national food security besides focusing on crop improvement research towards breeding varieties for stress tolerance, early maturity, specially in paddy. The PAU has prepared a set of production-cum-protection technologies in respect of select crops like wheat, ghobi sarson, sunflower, etc. The PAU has now recommended use of Happy Seeder for sowing wheat. Field experiments spread over 40 acres at 15 different locations in Punjab have revealed that farmers who sowed wheat by using Happy Seeder harvested 10 per cent higher yield than when sown with conventional practices. Among other research highlights, the participating officers would also be informed about adaptive trials in respect of certain crops and technologies. Mr Sidhu will brief the participants on the state’s rabi production targets and problems. There will be four technical sessions spread over two days. The participants will also make a field visit. Director of Extension Education Dr S.S. Gill said an exhibition would also be put up on the occasion. He said efforts were on for the standardisation of different crop varieties for sustainable agriculture. The participant would be impressed upon to stress on educating farmers to save water and to follow scientifically approved and recommended agronomic practices for remunerative returns. |
Budding designers showcase talent
Ludhiana, August 21 The designers’ creations caught the fancy of Mr Ashok Gupta, president of the club, as well as the audience. The contest depicted creativity and was a blend of style and fashion ideas conceived by the budding designers. The show, aptly named Fashion Cocktail, was a mixture of embroidery, macrame on a host of fabrics ranging from crepes to satins and lace. The first collection — Zennish — was put together by Harmanpreet of BSc (final year) and was inspired by the golden land of Thailand. The next sequence — Khalbali — was designed by Nancy, Anjali, Ravneet, Chandani, Charanjeev, Shah Nawaz, Nazi and Jaagir, and presented a potpourri of collections that ranged from tie and dye to harem costumes. Striptease, a collection of three designers — Shilpa, Manpreet and Avneet of BSc (third year), made the audience revisit and enjoy those “never to come back” school days as one witnessed softness, elegance and young looks through the pinhole of nostalgia. Print Battalion presented a range of camouflage prints and was the creation of Rashmi Kalra of BSc, Fashion Design (final year) whereas Flirtine, designed by Seema Arora and Shruti Anand, derived its inspiration from celebrities. A mindblowing collection that revealed feminism was titled Aabshaar and was the brainchild of Simarjeet Kaur and Narinder Kaur of BSc, Fashion Design (final year). Mavericks — that showcased wild and wacky Robin Hood and Kashmiri warriors — was beautifully conceived and presented by Pritosh and Shilpa. Illusion was a presentation of Shruti Anand and presented a world of mystery catching the attention of the audience through its cuts and fabrics. Ibtidaa had a team of designers — Seema Arora, Ashim Garg, Simerjeet Kaur, Paritosh Kumar, Rashmi Kalra and Harmanpreet of the final year and Neha Gupta, Aarti, Prabhjot, Ruchika, Taranpreet, Dashvir and Shweta of Advance Diploma (second year). They presented lehngas and sherwanis. The results are as follows: Best sequence — Paritosh Kumar for Mavericks. The second best sequence — Seema Arora for Flirtine. The third best sequence was shared by Manpreet, Shilpa, Avneet and Harmanpreet for Striptease and Power Den. The most innovative collection was Illusion by Shruti Anand. “Sadhbhavna Divas” celebrated

With the declaration of results of MA-II (sociology) of Panjab University, Chandigarh, Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Ludhiana has once again got 100 per cent pass result. Its students have clinched five positions from top 10 positions in the university. Poonam stood third in the university with 64.5 per cent marks, Shweta bagged fourth position with 61 per cent marks, Gagandeep Kaur stood fifth with 60.7 per cent marks. Members of the Moti Bagh Welfare Society collected Rs 100 from each member and planted 200 saplings in Phullanwala during the past one week and also installed 50 streetlights. Prof Pragat Singh, general secretary of the society, said Phullanwala was the best developed colony. The Municipal Corporation and the gram panchayat had done nothing to improve the colony. So the members had decided to pool in resources and take the task of beautifying Phullanwala. |
